The Barnworth Engineered Smoked Oak Brushed and Lacquered is a 14mm engineered oak floor with a 3mm wear layer, designed for homes that want a deeper wood tone with a finish that’s easy to maintain. The smoked colouring adds depth to the oak, while the engineered core helps reduce movement caused by changes in temperature and humidity. It’s also suitable for use with water-based underfloor heating, making it a practical option across a range of rooms.
Each board is 150mm wide, offering a steady, balanced plank size that works well in most spaces. It avoids the busier look of narrower boards while still feeling proportioned in smaller rooms.
The surface is brushed and lacquered. Brushing lifts the natural grain slightly, giving a subtle texture underfoot that feels closer to real timber. The lacquered finish seals the surface, helping protect against everyday wear and making cleaning more straightforward.
This is mixed grade oak, so you’ll see knots, grain variation, and tonal differences between boards. The smoked finish adds contrast to these features, giving the floor a bit more depth once installed. Boards are supplied in mixed lengths, which helps avoid a repeated pattern.
The 3mm solid oak wear layer allows the floor to be sanded and refinished up to two times. In most homes, this isn’t something you’ll need to consider for at least 10 to 15 years. The 14mm thickness, combined with the engineered core, provides a stable and durable structure over time.
Installation uses a tongue and groove system, with boards designed to be glued together. It’s typically fitted as a floating floor over a 3mm underlay, which helps improve insulation and reduce noise. When installing over water-based underfloor heating, a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended, with a maximum surface temperature of 27°C.
The lacquered finish creates a sealed surface, offering better resistance to spills and everyday wear than an oiled floor. Liquids should still be wiped up promptly, and the floor is not suitable for bathrooms or areas with standing water.
When ordering, allow around 10% extra for wastage and cuts, plus an additional 5% to account for natural variation in grading.
We like the Barnworth Smoked Oak Brushed and Lacquered because it gives you a darker floor that’s still easy to manage day to day. The lacquered finish takes away some of the upkeep, while the smoked tones add a bit more depth to the room.
Tahire, our Product Expert, recommends the Barnworth because:
Pet Friendly: Lacquered surface helps resist light scratches
Family Friendly: Smoked tones help disguise everyday wear
Spill Resistant: Sealed finish offers better protection against spills
Balanced Look: 150mm width suits a wide range of spaces
