125mm planks create a more traditional and detailed floor layout
Brushed and lacquered finish combines natural texture with added protection
18mm overall thickness provides a solid and durable feel underfoot
4mm solid oak wear layer allows sanding and refinishing up to three times
Engineered construction improves stability in changing conditions
Mixed length boards help create a more natural staggered appearance
The Caledonian Engineered Benmore Oak Brushed and Lacquered is designed for homes wanting the warmth of traditional oak flooring with a little more texture and surface definition. The brushed finish helps emphasise the natural grain patterns within the oak, while the lacquered coating adds practical protection for everyday living.
Each board measures 125mm wide, giving the floor a more classic plank appearance compared to wider contemporary boards. This narrower format creates a more detailed floor layout that works especially well in period homes, cosy living spaces, and interiors where a timeless wood floor look is preferred. The boards are supplied in mixed lengths, helping the finished floor appear more natural and less repetitive once installed.
The surface is finished with a combination of brushing and lacquering. Brushing lightly textures the oak by removing some of the softer grain, helping the natural markings and patterns stand out more clearly. The lacquer then seals the surface, adding protection against everyday wear while making the floor easier to clean and maintain compared to unfinished or oiled alternatives.
This is mixed grade oak, so natural knots, grain movement, and tonal variation are all part of the finished appearance. These natural features help create a more authentic wood floor look and add extra character throughout the room.
The floor uses an engineered multi-layer construction, designed to improve stability compared to solid wood flooring. This helps minimise movement caused by changes in humidity and temperature, making the floor suitable for conservatories and water-based underfloor heating systems. Bathrooms and areas exposed to standing moisture should still be avoided.
With an 18mm overall thickness and a 4mm solid oak wear layer, the floor has a substantial feel underfoot while offering excellent long-term durability. The wear layer allows the surface to be sanded and refinished up to three times during its lifespan. In most domestic settings, refinishing is unlikely to be necessary for many years, but it does provide additional longevity over thinner engineered products.
Installation uses a tongue and groove fitting system, with boards designed to be glued together and typically installed as a floating floor. An underlay is usually fitted beneath the flooring to help improve insulation, reduce sound transfer, and offer some protection against minor subfloor moisture. For water-based underfloor heating, a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended, with floor surface temperatures kept below 27°C.
The lacquered surface offers a practical balance between natural appearance and easier maintenance, making it a good choice for busier homes where a more durable finish is preferred.
When ordering, allow approximately 10% extra for cuts and wastage, plus an additional 5% for natural grading variation.
The Caledonian Benmore Oak Brushed and Lacquered has a more traditional feel thanks to the narrower planks, but the brushed texture stops it from looking too flat or uniform. It’s a nice balance between natural character and everyday practicality.
Tahire, our Product Expert, recommends the Caledonian because:
Natural Texture: Brushed finish highlights the grain beautifully
Practical Surface: Lacquered coating helps simplify day-to-day maintenance
Solid Construction: 18mm thickness gives the floor a reassuringly sturdy feel
Timeless Layout: Narrower planks suit both traditional and modern homes
