150mm planks create a balanced and spacious floor layout
Brushed and oiled finish enhances the oak grain with subtle texture
18mm overall thickness gives the floor a solid and durable feel underfoot
4mm solid oak wear layer allows sanding and refinishing up to three times
Engineered construction improves stability in changing conditions
Mixed length boards help create a more natural staggered appearance
The Caledonian Engineered Cairnwell Oak Brushed and Oiled combines the warmth of natural oak with a textured finish designed to bring out the wood’s natural detail and character. The brushed surface adds depth and definition to the grain, while the oiled finish keeps the overall appearance softer and more natural than a heavily lacquered floor.
Each board measures 150mm wide, offering a versatile plank size that suits both traditional and contemporary interiors. The width helps create a more open feel within the room while still maintaining enough detail for a classic wood floor appearance. The boards are supplied in mixed lengths, helping the overall layout feel more varied and natural once installed.
The floor features a brushed and oiled surface, where brushing lightly textures the oak by removing some of the softer grain. This helps highlight the natural patterns and markings within the wood while giving the surface a more tactile feel underfoot. The oil then enhances the warmth and colour variation of the oak without covering the surface beneath a thicker top coating.
This is mixed grade oak, meaning natural knots, tonal changes, and grain movement are all part of the finished appearance. These variations help give the floor more authenticity and prevent the overall look from appearing too uniform.
The flooring is built using an engineered multi-layer construction, designed to improve stability compared to solid wood flooring. This helps minimise movement caused by changes in humidity and temperature, making the floor suitable for conservatories and water-based underfloor heating systems. Bathrooms and areas exposed to standing moisture should still be avoided.
With an 18mm overall thickness and a 4mm solid oak wear layer, the floor offers a substantial feel underfoot while also providing excellent long-term durability. The wear layer allows the surface to be sanded and refinished up to three times throughout its lifespan. In most domestic environments, refinishing is unlikely to be necessary for many years, but it does provide additional longevity and flexibility.
Installation uses a tongue and groove fitting system, with boards designed to be glued together and typically installed as a floating floor. An underlay is usually fitted beneath the flooring to help improve insulation, reduce sound transfer, and provide some protection against minor subfloor moisture. For water-based underfloor heating, a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended, with floor surface temperatures kept below 27°C.
As this is an oiled floor, the surface is not completely sealed, so spillages should be cleaned promptly to help avoid moisture marking. One benefit of an oiled finish is that smaller scratches or worn areas can often be repaired locally without refinishing the entire floor.
When ordering, allow approximately 10% extra for cuts and wastage, plus an additional 5% for natural grading variation.
The Caledonian Cairnwell Oak Brushed and Oiled has a really natural and relaxed feel once fitted. The brushed texture adds plenty of character without becoming too rustic, while the oil keeps the oak looking warm and authentic.
Danielle, our Product Expert, recommends the Caledonian because:
Natural Texture: Brushed surface highlights the oak grain beautifully
Authentic Finish: Oiled coating keeps the wood looking soft and natural
Long-Term Durability: 4mm wear layer allows multiple refinishes over time
Versatile Styling: 150mm planks suit both modern and traditional homes
