Description

The Caledonian Engineered Carron Oak Brushed and Oiled is a wide plank engineered wood floor designed to showcase the natural warmth and texture of real oak. The brushed surface helps emphasise the grain detail within the wood, while the oiled finish keeps the floor looking soft, natural, and full of character rather than heavily coated or overly polished.

Each board measures 190mm wide, creating a spacious and more contemporary floor layout with fewer visible joins across the room. The wider planks work particularly well in larger spaces and open-plan interiors, helping the floor feel clean and uncluttered once installed.

The surface is finished with a combination of brushing and oiling. Brushing lightly textures the oak by removing some of the softer grain, helping the natural markings and grain patterns become more visible and tactile underfoot. The oil then enriches the oak’s natural colouring while allowing the wood to retain a softer and more authentic appearance than lacquered alternatives.

This is mixed grade oak, meaning knots, tonal variation, and grain movement are all part of the finished appearance. These natural features add extra depth and individuality to the floor, helping it feel more like genuine timber rather than a uniform manufactured surface.

The flooring uses an engineered multi-layer construction, designed to provide greater stability than solid wood flooring. This helps minimise movement caused by seasonal temperature and humidity changes, making the floor suitable for conservatories and water-based underfloor heating systems. Bathrooms and areas exposed to standing moisture should still be avoided.

With a substantial 20mm overall thickness and a 4mm solid oak wear layer, the floor has a solid and durable feel underfoot while also offering excellent long-term lifespan. The wear layer allows the surface to be sanded and refinished up to three times during its life. In most domestic settings, refinishing is unlikely to be needed for many years, but it provides useful long-term flexibility.

Installation uses a tongue and groove fitting system, with boards designed to be glued together and typically installed as a floating floor. An underlay is generally fitted beneath the flooring to help improve insulation, reduce sound transfer, and provide protection against minor subfloor moisture. For water-based underfloor heating, a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended, with floor surface temperatures kept below 27°C.

As this is an oiled floor, the surface is not fully sealed, so spillages should be cleaned promptly to help prevent moisture marking. One of the advantages of an oiled finish is that smaller scratched or worn areas can often be repaired locally without refinishing the entire floor.

This is a fixed length product, and each pack may include starter boards to help you stagger the layout for a more natural finish.

When ordering, allow approximately 10% extra for cuts and wastage, plus an additional 5% for natural grading variation.

Why We Love It

The Caledonian Carron Oak Brushed and Oiled feels substantial and full of natural character thanks to the wide boards, textured grain, and thicker construction. The oiled finish keeps the oak looking warm and authentic, which works beautifully in both modern and more traditional homes.

Georgia, our Product Expert, recommends the Caledonian because:

Wide Plank Design: 190mm boards help create a more spacious appearance

Natural Texture: Brushed finish adds depth and grain definition

Solid Construction: 20mm thickness gives the floor a premium feel underfoot

Repair Friendly: Oiled surface allows smaller areas to be repaired locally

  • Each board is manufactured with a tongue and groove profile, so each board can simply be glued together.
  • This engineered oak is typically installed as a floating floor with a 5mm underlay on the subfloor, providing protection from dampness and serving as a sound barrier and insulator.
  • This product has a mixed grade, so it will contain some knots, which is typical for natural wood.
  • Please note, an oiled finish isn't impermeable and might not be ideal for spill-prone areas
  • Each pack may contain starter boards to allow you to stagger your layout.
  • Please keep in mind that the industry standard includes 10% for wastage and cut-offs, and 5% for visual grading. Make sure to factor this into your calculations when ordering.
Customer Questions
What is engineered wood flooring?
Engineered wood is real wood on top, with stable layers beneath.
Do I need to acclimatise my wood flooring before fitting?
Yes, you must acclimatise your wood flooring before installation. For engineered wood, allow 48–72 hours; for solid wood, give it at least 7 days. Keep the packs flat, unopened, and in a room with stable conditions.
Can I install wood flooring over underfloor heating?
Yes, you can install wood flooring over underfloor heating—but it must be a water-based system. Never use electric underfloor heating with wood flooring, as it can overheat and damage the boards.
Do I need expansion gaps when fitting wood flooring?
Yes, always leave an expansion gap of 10–15mm around the perimeter of your wood flooring. This allows the wood to expand and contract naturally with changes in temperature and humidity.
Can engineered wood flooring be sanded?
Yes, engineered wood flooring can be sanded, but only if the top wear layer is thick enough—usually at least 3mm. Thinner layers may not allow for sanding without damage.
