Description
The Caledonian Engineered Isla Oak Matt Lacquered Click Lok is a good choice for homes wanting a more traditional oak floor with a softer, natural-looking finish. The narrower plank width gives the floor a more classic appearance compared to wider contemporary boards, while the matt lacquer keeps the surface looking understated rather than overly glossy.
Each board measures 125mm wide, which creates a more detailed and traditional layout once fitted. This style works particularly well in period homes, smaller rooms, and spaces where wider planks could feel too modern or oversized. The boards are supplied in mixed lengths, helping the floor feel less repetitive and more natural across the room.
The surface is finished with a matt lacquer, which protects the wood while keeping the sheen level lower than standard lacquered floors. This allows more of the oak’s natural grain and colour variation to remain visible, helping the floor retain a more authentic timber appearance while still being practical for everyday use.
This is mixed grade oak, so you’ll see natural knots, grain movement, and tonal variation between boards. Those details add character throughout the floor and help prevent the layout from looking too uniform once installed.
Underneath the oak layer is an engineered multi-ply core, designed to improve stability compared to solid wood flooring. This helps reduce expansion and contraction caused by changes in temperature and humidity, making the floor suitable for conservatories and water-based underfloor heating systems. Bathrooms and areas with standing water should still be avoided.
The 3mm solid oak wear layer allows the surface to be sanded and refinished up to two times over its lifespan. In most homes, this level of refinishing won’t be needed for many years, but it does provide additional longevity compared to thinner engineered boards.
Installation uses a Click Lok system, allowing the boards to click together for a faster and more straightforward fit. For the best finish, the boards should still be tapped into place using a tapping block and rubber mallet to ensure all joins are fitted tightly together. The floor is typically installed as a floating floor over a 3mm underlay, which helps improve insulation, reduce sound transfer, and provide protection from minor subfloor moisture. When fitting over water-based underfloor heating, a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended, with surface temperatures kept below 27°C.
The matt lacquered surface is relatively easy to maintain and offers better day-to-day protection than unfinished or oiled wood flooring. Regular sweeping and prompt cleaning of spills will help keep the finish looking its best over time.
When ordering, allow approximately 10% extra for cuts and wastage, plus an additional 5% for natural grading variation.
