The Caledonian Engineered Saddle Oak Lacquered is a versatile engineered wood floor designed to combine the natural character of oak with the practicality of a protective lacquered finish. Its balanced plank size and classic oak appearance make it well suited to a wide range of interiors, from traditional homes through to more modern living spaces.
Each board measures 150mm wide, offering a layout that feels spacious without becoming overly contemporary. The width works comfortably across both smaller rooms and larger open-plan areas, helping create a clean and balanced floor pattern once installed. The boards are supplied in mixed lengths, which helps give the floor a more natural and less repetitive appearance throughout the room.
The surface is finished with a protective lacquer, which seals the wood and helps improve resistance against everyday household wear. This makes the floor easier to clean and maintain compared to unfinished or oiled flooring, while still allowing the natural oak grain and variation to remain visible.
This is mixed grade oak, meaning knots, grain movement, and tonal variation are all part of the floor’s natural appearance. These details help give the flooring more depth and authenticity, ensuring the finished result feels more like real timber rather than a uniform manufactured surface.
The floor is built using an engineered multi-layer construction, designed to provide greater stability than solid wood flooring. This helps minimise movement caused by changes in humidity and temperature, making the floor suitable for conservatories and water-based underfloor heating systems. Bathrooms and areas exposed to standing moisture should still be avoided.
With an 18mm overall thickness and a 4mm solid oak wear layer, the floor offers a reassuringly solid feel underfoot while also providing excellent long-term durability. The wear layer allows the surface to be sanded and refinished up to three times during its lifespan. In most domestic environments, refinishing is unlikely to be needed for many years, but it does offer additional longevity and flexibility.
Installation uses a tongue and groove fitting system, with boards designed to be glued together and typically fitted as a floating floor. An underlay is generally fitted beneath the flooring to help improve sound insulation, heat retention, and protection from minor subfloor moisture. For water-based underfloor heating, a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended, with floor surface temperatures kept below 27°C.
The lacquered surface makes this floor particularly practical for busier households, as it offers easier day-to-day maintenance while still retaining the warmth and character expected from real oak flooring.
When ordering, allow approximately 10% extra for cuts and wastage, plus an additional 5% for natural grading variation.
The Caledonian Saddle Oak Lacquered offers a really versatile oak look that works across almost any style of home. The lacquered finish keeps maintenance straightforward, while the thicker construction gives the floor a reassuringly solid feel underfoot.
