Description

The Caledonian Engineered Tarbert Oak Brushed and Oiled is designed for homes that want a traditional oak floor with plenty of natural texture and variation. The warm natural oak colouring keeps the floor versatile, while the brushed and oiled finish gives the surface a softer and more authentic timber feel compared to smoother lacquered floors.

Each plank measures 150mm wide, creating a layout that feels balanced and practical in both smaller and larger rooms. It’s wide enough to avoid looking overly busy, but still detailed enough to suit more traditional interiors comfortably. The boards are also supplied in mixed lengths, helping the finished floor look more natural and less repetitive once installed.

The surface is brushed and oiled, which brings more of the oak grain and texture to the surface. Brushing lightly removes the softer grain from the wood, leaving behind subtle texture that can be felt underfoot. The oil then enhances the natural oak tones without covering them beneath a heavy surface coating, giving the floor a more relaxed and natural overall appearance.

This floor is graded as rustic oak, meaning knots, colour variation, and grain movement are all part of the design. Rather than looking perfectly uniform, the boards have more character and individuality, which suits country-style interiors and homes wanting a more natural wood look.

Underneath the oak layer is an engineered multi-layer core, designed to provide greater stability than solid wood flooring. This helps minimise expansion and contraction caused by seasonal humidity and temperature changes, making the floor suitable for conservatories and water-based underfloor heating systems. Bathrooms and areas exposed to standing moisture should still be avoided.

The 3mm solid oak wear layer allows the floor to be sanded and refinished up to two times during its lifespan. While most households won’t need to refinish the floor for many years, it does add useful long-term durability.

Installation uses a Click Lok fitting system, allowing the boards to click together more easily during fitting. Manufacturers recommend using a tapping block and rubber mallet to ensure all joins fit tightly together. The floor is typically installed as a floating floor over a 3mm underlay, helping improve sound reduction, insulation, and protection from minor subfloor moisture. For water-based underfloor heating, a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended.

Because this is an oiled floor, the surface is not fully sealed. Spillages should be cleaned up promptly to avoid moisture marking, particularly in busy areas such as kitchens and entrances. One advantage of oiled flooring, however, is that smaller worn areas can often be repaired locally without refinishing the entire floor.

When ordering, allow approximately 10% extra for cuts and wastage, plus an additional 5% for grading variation.

Why We Love It

The Caledonian Tarbert Oak Brushed and Oiled feels much more natural and relaxed than cleaner lacquered floors. The rustic grading and brushed texture give it genuine character, making it a great choice for homes that want a more lived-in wood floor appearance.

Georgia, our Product Expert, recommends the Caledonian because:

Rustic Character: Knots and grain variation give every board individuality

Natural Feel: Brushed and oiled surface feels closer to raw timber

Easy Installation: Click Lok system helps speed up fitting time

Repair Friendly: Smaller marks can often be spot repaired with oil treatment
