Description

The Caledonian Engineered Wyvis Smoked Oak Brushed and Oiled is designed to bring richer smoked oak tones and natural texture into the home, creating a floor with plenty of warmth and character. The darker colouring gives the boards added depth, while the brushed and oiled finish helps retain the authentic look and feel of real wood rather than a heavily coated surface.

Each board measures 150mm wide, offering a practical plank size that works comfortably across both traditional and contemporary interiors. The balanced width helps create a more open feel within the room without appearing overly modern or oversized. The boards are supplied in mixed lengths, helping the finished floor feel more natural and less repetitive once installed.

The surface is finished with a combination of brushing and oiling. Brushing lightly textures the oak by removing some of the softer grain, helping the natural markings and grain patterns become more visible underfoot. The oil then enriches the smoked colouring within the wood while maintaining a softer and more natural appearance than a lacquered surface.

This is mixed grade oak, meaning knots, grain variation, and tonal movement are all part of the finished look. These natural features work particularly well with the smoked finish, giving the floor more depth and helping it develop a relaxed and characterful appearance throughout the room.

The flooring uses an engineered multi-layer construction, designed to provide greater stability than solid wood flooring. This helps minimise movement caused by seasonal changes in humidity and temperature, making the floor suitable for conservatories and water-based underfloor heating systems. Bathrooms and areas exposed to standing moisture should still be avoided.

With an 18mm overall thickness and a 4mm solid oak wear layer, the floor offers a reassuringly solid feel underfoot while also providing excellent long-term durability. The wear layer allows the floor to be sanded and refinished up to three times during its lifespan. In most domestic environments, refinishing is unlikely to be necessary for many years, but it does provide useful long-term flexibility.

Installation uses a tongue and groove fitting system, with boards designed to be glued together and typically installed as a floating floor. An underlay is generally fitted beneath the flooring to help improve insulation, reduce sound transfer, and offer protection against minor subfloor moisture. For water-based underfloor heating, a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended, with floor surface temperatures kept below 27°C.

As this is an oiled floor, the surface is not fully sealed, so spillages should be cleaned promptly to help avoid moisture marking. One advantage of oil is that smaller worn or scratched areas can often be repaired locally without refinishing the entire floor.

When ordering, allow approximately 10% extra for cuts and wastage, plus an additional 5% for natural grading variation.

Why We Love It

The Caledonian Wyvis Smoked Oak Brushed and Oiled has a really warm and inviting appearance thanks to the richer smoked tones and textured finish. The brushed surface adds plenty of depth, while the oil keeps the floor looking natural rather than overly polished.

Charlotte, our Product Expert, recommends the Caledonian because:

Rich Smoked Colouring: Darker oak tones add warmth and depth to the room

Natural Texture: Brushed grain gives the surface extra character

Repair Friendly: Oiled finish allows smaller areas to be treated locally

Solid Construction: 18mm thickness gives the floor a durable and substantial feel

Customer Questions
What is engineered wood flooring?
Engineered wood is real wood on top, with stable layers beneath.
Do I need to acclimatise my wood flooring before fitting?
Yes, you must acclimatise your wood flooring before installation. For engineered wood, allow 48–72 hours; for solid wood, give it at least 7 days. Keep the packs flat, unopened, and in a room with stable conditions.
Can I install wood flooring over underfloor heating?
Yes, you can install wood flooring over underfloor heating—but it must be a water-based system. Never use electric underfloor heating with wood flooring, as it can overheat and damage the boards.
Do I need expansion gaps when fitting wood flooring?
Yes, always leave an expansion gap of 10–15mm around the perimeter of your wood flooring. This allows the wood to expand and contract naturally with changes in temperature and humidity.
Can engineered wood flooring be sanded?
Yes, engineered wood flooring can be sanded, but only if the top wear layer is thick enough—usually at least 3mm. Thinner layers may not allow for sanding without damage.
