Engineered wood flooring is made from multiple layers of plywood for additional durability but the top layer is solid wood. Due to its composition, it has the added benefits of higher resistance to temperature and humidity changes, making it a fantastic alternative to traditional solid wood floors. Once fitted, you won’t be able to tell the difference thanks to the top layer of solid wood.
Our black engineered wood flooring range features varied lengths, widths, and finishes to suit every style of home and budget. So, if you thought there was only one shade of black, then think again. With different textures and finishes available, you’ll find that our range of black engineered wood flooring varies massively. With some being jet black to create an ultimately dramatic look and others more weathered or glossy to create a more rustic or sleek finish.
Any engineered wood floor can be susceptible to scratches but will withstand daily use, even in busy households. If scratches are something that heavily concerns you, there are ways to ensure your flooring is more durable and can withstand them more easily.
Firstly, we should mention that black floors will show any scratches or damage more easily than other colours. Therefore, if you have pets or children, you may want to consider a distressed or brushed finish where they’ll be less noticeable. Too rustic? You could also opt for a lacquered finish which will offer more protection against scratches than oils or wax.
If you’re set on having a black floor and don’t want to choose a lacquered or distressed finish, then you’ll want to choose a thicker board. Thicker boards tend to have a thicker wear layer. This wear layer can always be sanded down and refinished in the future. The thicker the wear layer, the more times you will be able to re-sand and refinish your flooring.

No, due to the nature of engineered wood flooring, it is not waterproof. This is because the surface layer is made of solid wood. Therefore, to avoid damaging your flooring, you should clean any spillages up quickly, or within 2-3 hours at least. The longer you allow puddles to sit, the more likely it is that warping, or discolouration could occur. If you're looking for a floor that is waterproof and can withstand spillages, then you'll want to take a look at our LVT range.

Engineered wood floors must be acclimatised for at least 48-72 hours before being installed. Otherwise, your floor could end up warping, expanding, or retracting due to temperature changes. For more information on how to acclimatise your flooring, visit our blog.
Unfinished floors come completely untreated which means you will have to apply your own finish to the floor before installing. This allows designers and homeowners to finish the floor as they see fit, whether that’s with a stain, oil, or lacquer.
Brushed finishes offer a greater texture and more depth to the surface of the floor. To achieve this look, we brush the floor using steel wire wool to remove the thin upper layers during the manufacturing process. This leaves behind an enhanced grain and texture. The level of depth and texture varies, depending on the flooring type and level of brushing. Brushed finishes work particularly well with black floors because it brings back some of the texture that might otherwise be lost in the colour.
This effect aims to recreate the traditional look of wood flooring when a professional woodworker would hand finish each board which gave them unique characteristics. This gives the boards a very worn and rustic look whilst creating the underfoot feeling of a floor that has been around for years. To maximise and highlight the waviness of this finish, we suggest opting for a lacquered glossy floor.
Aged flooring is the perfect alternative to reclaimed solid wood floors because they are easier to care for and cost much less. Varying levels of aged finishes are available, giving an impression of short and long-term wear.
If you want a black floor but still want to keep it looking rustic, then a distressed finish is perfect. Distressed finishes fully embrace dents and scratches to create a truly antique appearance.
Lacquered finishes are often the go-to for most customers because they offer more protection and are available in a wide range of textures. This includes brushed or not brushed, matt, gloss, satin matt, and extra matt. Lacquered flooring is ideal for heavier traffic and offers a high level of protection. However, we still recommend cleaning any spillages as soon as possible to keep your flooring looking its best.
Oils flow deep into the wood grain, enhancing the floor’s appearance and offering deep protection. However, unlike Lacquered finishes, oiled flooring does not create a surface layer and therefore requires more care over spillages. We also advise that you reapply oils to your flooring yearly to keep them in good condition, but this does depend on the footfall and traffic within that particular room.
If you plan on resanding and refinishing your flooring in the future then you may want to opt for thicker boards with a thicker veneer. This will allow you more opportunities to do so as only the veneer (aka the wear layer) can be sanded down. Thicker boards are also more hard wearing and provide a slightly improved sound reduction performance, which should be considered in upstairs apartments or bedrooms, for example. As well as this, thicker boards are usually more suited to higher traffic areas, where they can withstand greater use. However, they are often more expensive to show for this, so ultimately it comes down to budget and personal preference.
Tongue and groove is the most traditional method for installing engineered wood flooring; compatible boards fit together and hold in place with glue. The glue means tongue and groove flooring is free of nails, making it visually appealing and safe to walk barefoot.
You can install tongue and groove flooring onto a layer of underlay as a floating floor. Underlay has many benefits, such as providing sound dampening and protecting your flooring from moisture and temperature changes.
If you have a suitable subfloor (flat and sturdy surface such as concrete with a damp-proof membrane), you can glue your flooring to it with a strong adhesive. Glued installation creates a very stable and sturdy floor that will not shift under the pressures of daily life.
Click Lok flooring has a profiled edge which creates a glue-free, interlocking fitting system, meaning it can be laid more easily and relatively hassle-free. The Click Lok system used predominantly in engineered and laminate flooring is intended to make laying flooring easier for any DIY enthusiast, by simply pushing, dropping, or clicking boards into place.
If you’re considering Click Lok it’s important to think about the underlying surface on which your new engineered flooring will be laid. Uneven surfaces make Click Lok much more difficult to fit and keep in place, which often means the need for levelling underlay.
