What is Golden Engineered Wood Flooring?

Golden engineered wood flooring is a popular alternative to golden solid wood floors. Instead of being made from solely oak or walnut, these floors have been engineered to last the test of time.

Engineered wood flooring such as this is comprised of 3 different layers. The wear layer is the top layer of solid wood. This layer can vary in species such as oak or walnut, but its main purpose is aesthetics. It’s also the only layer that can be sanded back and refinished if required. Underneath the wear layer sits the core layer. The core layer is usually made from plywood and helps improve the durability of the boards. Not only does it make the boards more stable, which is perfect for wide boards, but it also makes them less susceptible to warping from temperature and humidity changes as well. To finalise the engineered wood boards, a backing layer is added to create a barrier between the flooring and subflooring.

Golden engineered wood flooring has then also been stained to give it a bold and vibrant colour that works well in a variety of different interiors. When paired with a lacquered finish, golden engineered wood flooring works extremely well in modern, contemporary, or minimalist interiors. Whereas a brushed finish makes this flooring perfect for cosy cottages or country farmhouses. Or, if you have a more traditional home, then handscraped golden engineered wood flooring may be more suitable.

Does Engineered Wood Flooring Scratch Easily?

Any wood floor can potentially suffer from scratches but can endure daily wear and tear, even in busy households. However, if the worst scenario occurs, you can sand and refinish our golden engineered wood flooring to give it a new lease of life. You can also choose from a multitude of finishes that will help prevent scratches such as oil. Hence why oiled flooring can be a great choice for busy family homes, with pets and children to consider.

Is Engineered Wood Flooring Waterproof?

No. Engineered wood flooring consists of real wood, making it naturally non-waterproof. Some wood finishes, such as lacquer, can enhance its water resistance. However, we still recommend cleaning up any spills within 2-3 hours to prevent warping or discoloration.

How Long Does Engineered Wood Flooring Need to Acclimatise?

Failing to acclimatise your flooring can lead to installation issues further down the line. Therefore, we advise that you let your golden engineered wood flooring acclimatise for a minimum of 48 hours. For more information regarding acclimatising engineered wood, visit our guide.

Golden Engineered Wood Flooring Finishes & Treatments

Brushed

Brushed finishes offer a greater texture and more depth to the surface of the floor. To achieve this look, we brush the floor using steel wire wool to remove the thin upper layers during the manufacturing process. This leaves behind an enhanced grain and texture. The level of depth and texture varies, depending on the flooring type and level of brushing. Brushed finishes complement smoked floors particularly well, adding to the ‘worn’ feel for a truly rustic appearance.

Distressed

Our distressed golden engineered wood flooring takes the rustic appearance one step further, with a purposeful ‘worn’ finish. Unlike most floor finishes which aim for a more consistent and perfected appearance, our distressed floors embrace dents and scratches. These enhanced ‘imperfections’ are what give our distressed floors a truly antique appearance that can complement even the most rustic interiors.

Handscraped

This effect aims to recreate the traditional look of wood flooring when a professional woodworker would hand finish each board, which gave them unique characteristics. This finish especially looks good on glossy, lacquered flooring where the reflection highlights the waviness of the finish.

Lacquered

Lacquered finishes are often the go-to for most customers because they offer more protection and are available in a wide range of textures. This includes brushed or not brushed, matt, gloss, satin matt, and extra matt. Lacquered flooring is ideal for heavier traffic and offers a high level of protection. However, we still recommend cleaning any spillages as soon as possible to keep your flooring looking its best.

Oiled

Oils flow deep into the wood grain, enhancing the floor’s appearance and offering deep protection. However, unlike lacquered finishes, oiled flooring does not create a surface layer and therefore requires more care over spillages. We also advise that you reapply oils to your flooring yearly to keep them in good condition, but this does depend on the footfall and traffic within that particular room.

Wood Species

Oak

Oak is the most popular choice when it comes to wood flooring and our golden oak engineered wood flooring is no exception. Engineered oak flooring offers the exact appearance of a hardwood oak floor, thanks to the veneer layer of solid wood. This means our golden oak engineered flooring can cope with heat, humidity, and heavy foot traffic much better than your average oak floor. Whether you prefer red or white oak, golden oak engineered wood flooring offers plenty of choice with a huge range of products available in various finishes. Oak floors also have a much tighter grain variation, resulting in less difference in grains and texture between each board. Walnut

Walnut is the less popular option of the two and this is mostly because it's a rarer product that is harder to source and therefore more expensive to buy. However, for those seeking a luxurious touch to their flooring design, our walnut wood floors are the perfect choice. With a rich and elegant appearance, walnut flooring is ideal for grand entrances and large living rooms. Walnut flooring features vibrant colours and wider grains compared to oak, giving it a unique and striking character. However, walnut floors do tend to have more variation from plank to plank, so if you're looking for a more uniform appearance, then walnut floors may not be for you.

Golden Engineered Wood Flooring Thickness

Board Thickness

If you plan on resanding and refinishing your flooring in the future, then you may want to opt for thicker boards with a thicker veneer. This will allow you more opportunities to do so as only the veneer (aka the wear layer) can be sanded down. As well as this, thicker boards are usually more suited to higher traffic areas, where they can withstand greater use. However, they are often more expensive to show for this, so ultimately it comes down to budget and personal preference.

Wear Layer

The wear layer refers to the top, aesthetic surface layer of real wood, which gives the engineered flooring its look. Thicker wear layers, whilst usually more expensive, offer greater durability and the option to sand more frequently, meaning flooring can be refreshed more times before being replaced.

Most engineered wood floors, regardless of the thickness of the wear layer, will provide years of use, maintaining their impressive appearance.

Sanding Guide

In most cases, sanding the top layer of engineered wood flooring will remove up to 1MM of surface, with a minimum of 1MM leftover for protection. As a rough guide, here’s the number of times a floor can be sanded, based on the initial wear layer thickness:

3mm: 1-2 times

4mm: 2-3 times

5mm: 3-4 times

6mm: 4-5 times

Engineered Flooring Installation Methods

Tongue & Groove

A traditional method of fitting flooring, Tongue & Groove is a tried and tested installation type that involves tessellating profiled edges together using glue, such as PVA.

Whilst it can be slower to fit than other methods, some customers prefer the peace of mind that it provides.

Floating Floor

You can install tongue and groove flooring onto a layer of underlay as a floating floor. Underlay has many benefits, such as providing sound dampening and protecting your flooring from moisture and temperature changes.

Click Lok System

Click Lok flooring has a profiled edge which creates a glue-free, interlocking fitting system. This often makes it the most popular choice for DIY installations.

If you’re considering Click Lok, it’s important to think about the underlying surface on which your new engineered flooring will be laid. Uneven surfaces make Click Lok much more difficult to fit and keep in place, which often means the need for levelling underlay.

Bond Down

If you have a suitable subfloor (flat and sturdy surface such as concrete with a damp-proof membrane), you can glue your flooring to it with a strong adhesive. Glued installations create a very stable and sturdy floor, especially with thick boards, such as 20mm engineered wood.

Simply add the adhesive to the subfloor, using a trowel. Then place the flooring planks on top of the glue and repeat. You will have to pull the flooring tightly together during installation to avoid gaps.

Once the adhesive is dry, it is fully flexible, allowing the floor to naturally move with changes in temperature and humidity, without causing damage.
