Engineered Wood

Engineered wood flooring is a fantastic option for those looking for a real wood floor with more versatility than solid wood, but with the same beautiful and natural appearance. Engineered wood is created from layers of timber compressed under high intensity conditions to create a rigid and durable floorboard.

The top layer of the floor is the highest quality, either oak or walnut, to create the final look of your engineered floor.

It creates extremely long-lasting floorboards that have several advantages over solid wood, including being able to be in wet environments and withstand changes in temperature. It means that 14mm engineered wood floors are a fantastic option for kitchens and bathrooms, as well as homes with underfloor heating.

Why choose Engineered Wood Flooring?

All real wood floors look beautiful in homes and commercial spaces, whether it’s solid or engineered wood, but why do many people opt for engineered wood flooring?

Due to the layers of timber that create the floor, engineered wood is tougher than real wood. Solid wood floors have no protection against moisture or heat. When they come into contact with water or moisture in the air, they are at risk of warping. Changing temperatures can cause the wood to shrink or expand, causing lasting damage to your floor.

Engineered wood on the other hand is naturally protected against water and heat. It means that it’s the ideal real wood floor option for spaces prone to spills or moisture - including kitchens and bathrooms.

14mm Flooring

14mm engineered wood flooring is in the mid-range of all the thicknesses that we have available at Flooring 365. They range from 10mm through to 22mm. It makes it a fantastic and popular choice as it balances the range of advantages that different thicknesses have.

Floor Thickness

14mm engineered wood flooring is a popular choice for mid-thickness floor options. When you’re choosing the thickness of your floor you should consider various factors, which include the thickness of the previous floor, the sound proofing requirements of your property, the evenness of your subfloor and whether you have underfloor heating.

Previous Flooring

If your previous floor was 14mm, it’s often a good idea to opt for another 14mm floor. Choosing an engineered wood floor that’s the same thickness as your previous floor ensures you won’t need to alter door heights or replace skirting boards to accommodate additional thickness or to remove gaps.

Noise Reduction

It’s important to consider the way sound moves through your property, particularly if you live in an apartment or flat. A thicker floor will minimise the transmission of noise between your apartment and the one below. A mid thickness floor such as the 14mm option is a great choice, but you can get floors as thick as 22mm.

If your subfloor is even, then you can choose any thickness of floor without it causing a problem. However, if you have an uneven subfloor, it’s often worth choosing a thicker floor which is better at minimising the impact of unevenness.

Unlike solid wood floors, engineered wood flooring can withstand changes in temperature and can therefore be paired with underfloor heating without risking damage to the wood. A thicker floor will prevent the heat from entering your room, which is why we recommend 14mm engineered wood flooring as the maximum thickness for homes with underfloor heating.
