What is Engineered Wood Flooring?

Engineered wood flooring is a fantastic choice for those looking for the beauty and class of a real wood floor, with the durability, water and heat resistance, and strength of an engineered material. Unlike solid wood floors, engineered wood doesn’t warp, shrink or expand in different heat or moisture conditions, making it appropriate for use throughout the home.

Engineered wood flooring is made up of layers of different varieties of timber. These are compressed under high-intensity conditions into one plank. The top layer is always the highest quality real wood, either oak or walnut, and creates the final appearance of the floor.

This form of layering timber creates an extremely solid and durable wooden floorboard. Engineered wood flooring is appropriate for underfloor heating systems, kitchens and bathrooms.

Engineered Wood vs Solid Wood

While engineered wood brings fantastic heat and moisture resistance, some people opt for solid wood as it can be resanded and surfaced to increase its lifespan. Once the floor begins to lose its shine, becomes scuffed or discoloured, sanding it down and resurfacing with an oil, lacquer or brush brings back the colour and makes it look like a new floor again. However, 15mm engineered wood flooring can offer this too.

The thicker the engineered wood flooring, the more times it can be sanded and resurfaces, increasing the longevity of the floor. 15mm thickness is the mid-range that we offer. While 18mm or 20mm can be resurfaced more frequently, 15mm still offers approximately four resurfaces.

To see the number of times the floor you love can be resurfaced, look at the ‘veneer’ layer thickness. A 4mm veneer thickness allows you to sand and resurface approximately 4 times.

Wood Flooring Thickness

Choosing the correct thickness for your floor can be difficult if you have no experience with flooring before. You can ask an expert to evaluate your home and provide their advice, alternatively, you can follow our top tips:

It’s good to consider the insulation that your property needs. Older properties often benefit from a thicker floor for extra insulation. A 15mm engineered wood floor is a great option for balancing the benefits of additional insulation without the full thickness of a 22mm.

Noise Reduction

If you live in an apartment, you might want to consider how your choice of floor can reduce the transfer of noise between your own home and the apartment beneath. A thicker floor will help minimise the sound of footsteps, talking and music disturbing your neighbours below.

Current Flooring

If you’re replacing an existing floor with a new engineered wood floor, it’s important to consider the thickness of the existing floor. The heights of doors and skirting boards will have been fitted around the existing floor. If you opt for a thicker or thinner floor, these might have to be adjusted, which can be additional work for you!

Underfloor Heating

If you have underfloor heating, a thick floor will prevent the heat from your system entering the room as it provides too much insulation. 15mm is the maximum thickness that we would recommend to people with underfloor heating.

15mm Engineered Wood Flooring

15mm engineered wood flooring is a great choice of flooring thickness as it’s middle of the range, combining the benefits of a thicker floor with those of a thinner floor. If you want a fantastic 15mm engineered wood floor in your home, then choose Flooring 365.
