Flooring Thickness
Knowing the right flooring thickness for your property or room can be difficult if you’ve not had experience with reflooring a space before - or if you’ve not had experience with engineered wood flooring before. Wood flooring thicknesses come in a wide range. 10mm is the thinnest engineered wood flooring thickness available. We have thicknesses going up to 22mm so no matter which you need, you can find the perfect one with us. Why not check out our full guide on how to choose the right floor thickness, or read the tips below.
How to Choose your Floor Thickness
If you’re not sure which thickness you need, there are various factors to consider. Thinner and thicker floorboards both have advantages, but it depends on what you need for your home.
Insulation
Engineered wood flooring can provide extra insulation to your home - particularly when paired with a high quality underlay. The thickness of your floor impacts the amount of insulation it provides. A thicker floor equals greater insulation.
Underfloor Heating
Unlike solid wood flooring, engineered wood flooring is resilient to changes in temperature and doesn’t shrink or warp. This not only makes it a great choice for conservatories, but also means it can be used with underfloor heating systems. However, it’s vital to consider the thickness of your floor. Too thick and your engineered wood flooring will prevent warmth from your underfloor heating penetrating into the room. Thin floors have the advantage - we recommend up to 15mm thickness for underfloor heating.
Longevity
Thick floors usually have a thicker top layer of real wood (known as the veneer) than thinner floors. This means that it has potential to be sanded and resurfaced more often than thinner floors, increasing the longevity of the floor. Engineered wood flooring is unlikely to need resurfacing before 10-15 years have passed, but a thicker floor does mean a longer overall lifespan.
Sound Insulation
If you live in an apartment or are flooring an upstairs room, it’s worth considering how engineered wood flooring thickness impacts the transference of sound. With thinner floors, the sound of footsteps, voices and other noises are more likely to be heard in lower rooms. Thicker floors provide greater sound insulation and are therefore a great choice for apartments of upstairs rooms.
Cost
As thicker floors use more material, they are often more expensive in price. If you’re on a tighter budget, then a thinner floor might work better for you.
We have a wide range of medium thickness floors that allow you to balance all the different advantages of different floor thicknesses. Flooring 365 are one of the best flooring providers if you’re looking for high quality, but cheap flooring. Not only do we have an incredible warehouse clearance sale, but we also are always knocking down prices to bring you the best deals available online.
