A lacquer finish on engineered wood flooring offers the highest levels of protection. It’s the best way to protect real wood flooring in areas with heavy foot traffic. It keeps your floor protected for as long as possible.

A lacquered engineered wood floor also provides a much shinier finish than many other options as the lacquer reflects the light. It’s often an extremely popular choice in commercial and business environments as it looks highly professional, but it can also be used at home.

If you want the highest levels of protection for your engineered wood flooring, but don’t like the shiny appearance, you can opt instead for a matt lacquer. This still has a bit of shine, but is much reduced compared to a standard lacquer.

Lacquered vs Oiled

The key difference between an oiled and a lacquered engineered wood floor is that an oil finish soaks into the wood material while a lacquer sits on top. This means that while both varieties provide a highly protective layer, they do have slightly different properties.

A lacquer floor is the highest level of protection, which is why it’s the variety selected for areas such as dance halls and gyms. However, as the lacquer sits atop the wood, as it wears away the whole floor will need re-sanding and refinishing.

An oiled finish on the other hand still provides a high level of protection, but not quite as durable as a lacquer. Because the oil sinks into the wood, as the protective layer is gradually worn down, the floor is still protected. This means that it requires slightly more ongoing care (as it’s worn down a little more easily than a lacquer), but does require fewer major interventions.

If you’re using an engineered wood floor for an area with large amounts of foot traffic, then a brushed and lacquered floor is an excellent choice.

While we do have a range of lacquered engineered wood flooring, our brushed and lacquered range is perfect for those who want to emphasise the texture of the wood grain and pattern. A brushed finish means that the wood flooring has been treated with a wire brush before the lacquer is applied. This removes any new growth and exposes the beautiful texture of the wood floor beneath.
