Unfinished Engineered Flooring

Unfinished engineered flooring is a fantastic choice for those wanting to customise their own floor finish. You can get high-quality floors at amazing prices.

What is Unfinished Flooring?

Unfinished flooring is a variety of wooden floor that has been created into a floorboard but has not yet been oiled, stained or otherwise treated. The top layer is raw hardwood that’s ready to be finished once the floor has been installed.

Unfinished engineered wood flooring is made from multiple layers of timber. Most commonly, this is a hardwood oak top layer with plywood beneath. This creates an extremely rigid floorboard, which, once finished, is resistant to moisture and heat. Unlike hardwood floors, engineered wood flooring doesn’t warp, shrink or expand when it comes into contact with moisture or changing temperatures. This makes it perfect for bathrooms, kitchens and spaces throughout the house.

Unfinished Oak

Oak is the most common material used in real wood flooring, both engineered and solid wood. It’s incredibly versatile so provides one of the biggest ranges of floorboard sizes, colours and other variants available.

Unfinished oak is a beautiful option. It’s a more labour-intensive choice than oak flooring that’s already been finished, but it provides the highest levels of bespoke customisation available on engineered wood flooring.

Custom & Bespoke Flooring

Unfinished wood flooring takes a bit more work on your part to complete, but it’s worth it if you want a particular finish, colour and design on your floor. If you’re choosing from pre-finished floors, you’re limited by the choices on offer. Even the most comprehensive flooring suppliers might not have the particular and unique combination of material, colour and finish that you have in mind.

Unfinished flooring gives you complete choice and control.

Additional Protection

Unfinished floors have another advantage: extra protection for joints. Pre-finished oak flooring is installed after the oil or lacquer had been applied. With unfinished oak flooring, the oil and lacquer layer of protection is applied after installation. This means that the joints between the boards receive the finish too. It prevents liquid from seeping into the gaps between the boards giving additional protection.

How to Finish Unfinished Flooring

It is vital that unfinished flooring, once installed, is completed. If not, then the wood will very quickly become damaged by foot traffic, water spills and other demands of daily life. There are two options for finishing unfinished engineered oak flooring: oil and lacquer. Oil seeps into the wood, preserving the texture of the oak flooring while protecting it. Lacquer, on the other hand, sits on top of the wooden board and provides protection.

If you’re looking to maintain the natural texture and highlight the patterns in the wood, then oil might be the best choice. A lacquer finish is usually shinier and creates a smoother finish. If your space will experience particularly high levels of foot traffic, lacquer provides greater protection, so might be the better option.

Installing an unfinished floor is easy as you aren’t limited by a particular type of installation. You can glue, nail or float the floor according to your requirements and tastes. We have both click flooring, and tongue and groove available with our unfinished engineered flooring.
