Wood Species

Engineered wood flooring refers to any flooring that is made from layers of timber with a top layer of real wood. In theory, this means that engineered wood flooring can be found in any variety of wood species, but really, the most common varieties of real engineered wood flooring is oak and walnut. These are hardwood materials that are popular due to their durability, colour, versatility and texture. Oak and walnut make the best real engineered wood floors. To find out more about engineered wood flooring, read our handy guide.

Real Wood Flooring

Why choose real wood flooring over synthetic wood? While synthetic wood flooring, such as wood imitation laminate, gives the impression of a wood floor, it can never look as authentic and effective as real wood flooring. Laminate is printed with a wood texture, which means that a lot of the boards look the same.

Real engineered wood flooring, on the other hand, is unique every time with the exact pattern of each board being specific to the texture of the wood which created it. Every single board has slight variations from the one beside it; this is what creates the noticeably authentic look.

Our real engineered wood flooring comes in a massive range of different finished to produce the perfect floor for your taste. We have rustic, brushed, distressed, lacquered and oiled in both oak and walnut.

Oak is the most common variety of real engineered wood flooring. It’s been being used for centuries to create beautiful floors, and today is still the most popular wood species. This is largely due to its versatility. Because oak is a light colour, it can be stained to create a huge range of different effects from white to smoked to black.

Oak comes in a massive range of colours, but also a massive range of other finishes. Lacquered oak engineered flooring, for example, creates a shiny and highly durable finish while distressed oak is more rough and enhances the natural texture of the wood.

Walnut is the other popular choice for real engineered wood flooring. It’s popular largely due to its stunning colours. Walnut wood flooring is much darker in colour than oak, with red and rich brown tones that create breathtaking floors. Walnut is an extremely high quality wood species for engineered flooring, that is very hard and looks beautiful.

Walnut wood flooring undergoes colour change over its lifetime, and more quickly if it’s in particularly sunny environments. As it ages, walnut becomes lighter in colour, moving from a dark brown to a more amber or golden brown tone.
