Description

The Fyfield Engineered Natural Oak Brushed and Lacquered is an 18mm engineered oak floor with a 5mm wear layer, built for homes where you want a more traditional plank style combined with a durable, easy-care finish. The thicker construction gives it a solid feel underfoot, while the engineered core helps reduce movement caused by changes in temperature and humidity. It’s also suitable for water-based underfloor heating, which makes it a practical option across different spaces.

Each board is 125mm wide, which creates a more classic plank layout compared to wider boards. This adds more detail across the floor and works particularly well in traditional interiors or spaces where you want a bit more structure in the design.

The surface is brushed and lacquered. Brushing lifts the grain slightly, giving a subtle texture underfoot so the floor doesn’t feel completely smooth. The lacquered finish seals the surface, helping to protect against everyday wear and making cleaning more straightforward.

This is mixed grade oak, so you’ll see knots, grain variation, and colour differences between boards. These natural features give the floor a more authentic look once installed. Boards are supplied in mixed lengths, which helps avoid a repeated pattern.

The 5mm solid oak wear layer allows the floor to be sanded and refinished up to four times. In most homes, this isn’t something you’ll need to consider for at least 10 to 15 years, but it does give you more flexibility long term. Combined with the 18mm thickness and engineered core, it provides a stable and durable structure.

Installation uses a tongue and groove system, with boards designed to be glued together. It’s typically fitted as a floating floor over underlay, which helps improve insulation and reduce noise. A 3mm underlay is commonly used, while a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended when installing over water-based underfloor heating, with a maximum surface temperature of 27°C.

The lacquered finish provides a sealed surface, offering better resistance to spills and day-to-day wear than an oiled alternative. Liquids should still be wiped up promptly, and the floor is not suitable for bathrooms or areas with standing water.

When ordering, allow around 10% extra for wastage and cuts, plus an additional 5% to account for natural variation in grading.

Why We Love It

We like the Fyfield Natural Oak Brushed and Lacquered because it combines a more traditional look with a finish that’s easy to live with. You get the texture from the brushed surface, but without the extra upkeep that comes with oil.

Chris, our Product Expert, recommends the Fyfield because:

Pet Friendly: Lacquered surface helps resist light scratches

Family Friendly: Mixed grade oak blends in everyday wear and marks

Spill Resistant: Sealed finish offers better protection against spills

Long Lifespan: 5mm wear layer allows multiple sanding and refinishing over time

Customer Questions
What is engineered wood flooring?
Engineered wood is real wood on top, with stable layers beneath.
Do I need to acclimatise my wood flooring before fitting?
Yes, you must acclimatise your wood flooring before installation. For engineered wood, allow 48–72 hours; for solid wood, give it at least 7 days. Keep the packs flat, unopened, and in a room with stable conditions.
Can I install wood flooring over underfloor heating?
Yes, you can install wood flooring over underfloor heating—but it must be a water-based system. Never use electric underfloor heating with wood flooring, as it can overheat and damage the boards.
Do I need expansion gaps when fitting wood flooring?
Yes, always leave an expansion gap of 10–15mm around the perimeter of your wood flooring. This allows the wood to expand and contract naturally with changes in temperature and humidity.
Can engineered wood flooring be sanded?
Yes, engineered wood flooring can be sanded, but only if the top wear layer is thick enough—usually at least 3mm. Thinner layers may not allow for sanding without damage.
