Description

The Fyfield Engineered Natural Oak Brushed and Oiled is an 18mm engineered oak floor with a 5mm wear layer, designed for homes where you want a more traditional plank style without compromising on durability. The narrower boards create a more detailed layout across the floor, while the thicker construction gives it a solid, dependable feel underfoot. The engineered core helps reduce movement caused by changes in temperature and humidity, and it’s suitable for use with water-based underfloor heating.

Each board is 125mm wide, which gives a more classic appearance compared to wider planks. This creates a more structured look across the floor, with additional lines that add subtle detail without overwhelming the space.

The surface is brushed and oiled. Brushing lifts the natural grain slightly, giving the floor a gentle texture underfoot that feels more like real wood. The oiled finish enhances the natural tones of the oak while keeping the surface looking understated rather than heavily coated.

This is mixed grade oak, so you’ll see knots, grain variation, and colour differences between boards. These natural features give the floor more character once installed. Boards are supplied in mixed lengths, which helps create a more natural, less uniform layout.

The 5mm solid oak wear layer allows the floor to be sanded and refinished up to four times. In most homes, this won’t be something you need to consider for at least 10 to 15 years, but it does provide long-term flexibility. Combined with the 18mm thickness and engineered core, it offers a stable and durable structure over time.

Installation uses a tongue and groove system, with boards designed to be glued together. It’s typically fitted as a floating floor over underlay, which helps improve insulation and reduce noise. A 3mm underlay is commonly used, while a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended when installing over water-based underfloor heating, with a maximum surface temperature of 27°C.

Because this is an oiled wood floor, the surface is not fully sealed. Spills should be wiped up promptly to prevent marking, and it’s not suitable for bathrooms or areas where water can sit. The advantage is that any scratches or worn areas can be repaired locally by sanding and re-oiling, rather than refinishing the entire floor.

When ordering, allow around 10% extra for wastage and cuts, plus an additional 5% to account for natural variation in grading.

Why We Love It

We like the Fyfield Natural Oak Brushed and Oiled because it combines a more traditional plank style with a build that’s designed to last. The narrower boards add detail, while the thicker construction gives it a more substantial feel once installed.

Charlotte, our Product Expert, recommends the Fyfield because:

Pet Friendly: Brushed texture helps soften the look of light scratches

Family Friendly: Mixed grade oak blends in everyday wear and small dents

Spill Resistant (with care): Oiled finish offers protection, but spills should be wiped promptly

Long Lifespan: 5mm wear layer allows multiple sanding and refinishing over time
