Description

The Fyfield Engineered Natural Oak Brushed and Oiled is an 18mm engineered oak floor with a 5mm wear layer, built for homes where you want a natural look with added long-term flexibility. The structure is designed to handle changes in temperature and humidity, which helps reduce movement over time. It’s also suitable for use with water-based underfloor heating, making it a practical option across a range of rooms.

Each board is 150mm wide, offering a more traditional plank style compared to wider formats. This creates a consistent, balanced pattern across the floor without drawing too much attention to the joins, making it a good fit for both classic and modern interiors.

The surface is brushed and oiled. Brushing lifts the grain slightly, so you get a light texture underfoot that feels closer to natural timber. The oiled finish enhances the oak’s natural tones without adding a surface layer, which keeps the look more understated and closer to raw wood.

This is mixed grade oak, so you’ll see knots, grain variation, and colour differences between boards. These natural features give the floor more character once installed, rather than a uniform or repeated look. Boards are supplied in mixed lengths, which helps create a more natural overall layout.

The 5mm solid oak wear layer allows the floor to be sanded and refinished up to four times. In most homes, this isn’t something you’ll need to consider for at least 10 to 15 years, but it does offer long-term flexibility if the floor needs refreshing later on. Combined with the 18mm thickness and engineered core, it provides a stable and durable structure.

Installation uses a tongue and groove system, with boards designed to be glued together. It’s typically installed as a floating floor over underlay, which helps improve insulation and reduce noise. A 3mm underlay is commonly used, while a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended when installing over water-based underfloor heating, with a maximum surface temperature of 27°C.

Because this is an oiled wood floor, the surface is not fully sealed. Spills should be wiped up promptly to prevent marking, and it’s not suitable for bathrooms or areas where water can sit. The benefit is that any scratches or worn areas can be repaired locally by sanding and re-oiling, rather than refinishing the entire floor.

When ordering, allow around 10% extra for wastage and cuts, plus an additional 5% to account for natural variation in grading.

Why We Love It

We like the Fyfield Natural Oak Brushed and Oiled because it feels like a dependable, long-term option without looking heavy or overbuilt. The 150mm width keeps things balanced, while the thicker construction gives you that extra confidence it’ll last.

Georgia, our Product Expert, recommends the Fyfield because:

Pet Friendly: Brushed surface helps soften the look of light scratches

Family Friendly: Mixed grade oak blends in everyday wear and small dents

Spill Resistant (with care): Oiled finish offers protection, but spills should be wiped promptly

Long Lifespan: 5mm wear layer allows multiple sanding and refinishing over time

Customer Questions
What is engineered wood flooring?
Engineered wood is real wood on top, with stable layers beneath.
Do I need to acclimatise my wood flooring before fitting?
Yes, you must acclimatise your wood flooring before installation. For engineered wood, allow 48–72 hours; for solid wood, give it at least 7 days. Keep the packs flat, unopened, and in a room with stable conditions.
Can I install wood flooring over underfloor heating?
Yes, you can install wood flooring over underfloor heating—but it must be a water-based system. Never use electric underfloor heating with wood flooring, as it can overheat and damage the boards.
Do I need expansion gaps when fitting wood flooring?
Yes, always leave an expansion gap of 10–15mm around the perimeter of your wood flooring. This allows the wood to expand and contract naturally with changes in temperature and humidity.
Can engineered wood flooring be sanded?
Yes, engineered wood flooring can be sanded, but only if the top wear layer is thick enough—usually at least 3mm. Thinner layers may not allow for sanding without damage.
