The Glanwell Elite Engineered Natural Oak is a 20mm engineered oak floor with a 6mm wear layer, built for homes where you want something that will last without constantly worrying about movement or wear. The thicker construction makes a noticeable difference underfoot, and it handles changes in temperature and humidity well, which is why it works with water-based underfloor heating.

Each board is 190mm wide, so you don’t get lots of narrow strips breaking up the floor. Instead, you get longer, wider lines that help a room feel more open. It’s one of those details you don’t always think about until you see it down.

The finish is oiled, which keeps the look closer to natural wood rather than adding a surface coating. You still get protection, but the grain comes through properly, and the floor doesn’t feel overly processed. It also makes life easier long-term, because if a section gets worn or marked, you can deal with just that area instead of redoing everything.

This is mixed grade oak, so expect knots, colour variation, and natural markings across the boards. It doesn’t try to look uniform, which is what gives it that more authentic feel once it’s laid. You’ll also get  fixed length boards. Packs may contain starter boards, which can be used to help stagger the joints and create a more natural-looking layout across the finished floor.

The 6mm solid oak wear layer is what really sets this apart. It means the floor can be sanded and refinished up to five times, although most people won’t need to think about that for at least 10 to 15 years. Combined with the 20mm thickness and engineered multi-ply core, it stays stable and solid over time.

Installation is straightforward. These are tongue and groove boards designed to be glued together, usually fitted as a floating floor. A 5mm underlay is typically used to help with sound and insulation. If you’re installing over water-based underfloor heating, a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is the better option, and you’ll want to keep the surface temperature below 27°C.

Because it’s an oiled wood floor, it isn’t fully sealed. Spills should be wiped up when they happen to avoid marking, and it’s not suitable for bathrooms or areas where water can sit. That said, the upside is flexibility. If the floor picks up scratches over time, you can sand and re-oil specific areas rather than starting again.

When ordering, it’s worth allowing about 10% extra for cuts and wastage, plus another 5% to account for the natural variation between boards.
