The Highgate Natural Oak engineered wood floor gives you the best of both worlds: the authentic look of wide-plank oak with a practical, low-maintenance lacquered finish. If you want real wood without worrying about every spill or muddy paw print, this is the floor for you.
Each board is a generous 190mm wide. That extra width makes a real difference on the floor – rooms feel larger, hallways feel less like tunnels, and open-plan spaces flow more naturally.
The key difference with Highgate is the lacquered surface. Unlike oiled floors that need regular re-oiling and can stain if you leave a spill, this lacquer acts like a shield. It seals the wood completely, so you can wipe up juice, wine, or water without marking the timber. It’s also tougher against scuffs from furniture and high heels.
What the lacquered finish means for you
You get a floor that’s genuinely spill-resistant. That makes Highgate a much better choice for kitchens, dining rooms, and busy family homes than an oiled alternative. It’s also easier to clean day-to-day – just a dry mop or a slightly damp cloth will do.
The trade-off? Lacquered floors can show dust and footprints more than oiled ones, and if you do get a deep scratch, it’s harder to spot-repair. But for most people, the daily practicality wins out.
Built to last, built to stay stable
Underneath that tough lacquer is a proper engineered construction. The 14mm board includes a 3mm solid oak wear layer – that’s the real wood you see and walk on. Because it’s 3mm thick, you can sand and refinish this floor up to twice. In a normal home, you won’t need to touch it for at least 10–15 years.
The multi-ply core resists expanding and contracting with humidity far better than solid wood. That’s why you can install Highgate in conservatories – a space that would destroy a solid oak floor within a couple of years. It’s also fully compatible with water-based underfloor heating systems when installed correctly.
Installation – straightforward and forgiving
These are tongue and groove boards designed to be glued together. Most people fit them as a floating floor over a 3mm underlay. That underlay deals with minor subfloor moisture, cuts down sound transmission, and helps keep the room warm.
If you’re laying Highgate over water-based underfloor heating, swap to a 4mm compressed rubber underlay. That combination works perfectly – just check your heating manufacturer’s maximum temperature guidance first.
A couple of honest notes
The oak is mixed grade, so you will see natural knots, some colour variation, and small character marks. That’s not a fault – it’s proof this is real timber, not a printed fake. Boards also come in mixed lengths, which helps create a more natural, random-looking floor.
