Therefore, you must always clean up any spilled liquids as quickly as possible to avoid warping or discolouration. How Long Does Solid Wood Flooring Need To Acclimatise?

Solid wood flooring requires the most time to acclimate due to its solid wood composition. At Flooring365, we recommend that you let your floor acclimatise for a minimum of 7 days to get the best results after installation.

Solid Wood Flooring Finishes & Treatments

Unfinished

Unfinished oak floors are ideal for designers and homeowners alike. Offering the ability to finish the flooring any way you see fit, using a stain, oil, or lacquer. However, we always advise that you apply a finish to your flooring before installation. Otherwise, your flooring will be extremely susceptible to scratches and spillages. Finishes are there to provide the durability and protection that your solid wood flooring requires.

Brushed

Brushed finishes help enhance the natural character of the floor by gently brushing it with a steel comb. This removes the soft grains of the wood and leaves behind only the hard grains. You can then treat the flooring with oil or lacquer.

Handscraped

This finish aims to recreate the traditional look of solid wood flooring when a professional woodworker would hand finish each board. This finish especially looks good on glossy, lacquered flooring where the reflection highlights the waviness of the finish.

Lacquered

Lacquer is a varnish that dries to produce a hard, durable finish. This makes it a popular choice for many, but particularly ideal for areas with higher foot traffic, or areas where small amounts of liquid could be an issue, such as kitchens. 

Oiled

Oil seeps into the wood, rather than sitting above it. An ideal option if you want to maintain the surface texture of your solid wood floors, whilst still providing some resistance to damage. However, oiled floors will require more maintenance and care over spillages because it doesn’t create a surface layer in the same way as lacquer.

Solid Wood Flooring Thickness

Board Thickness

Generally speaking, board thickness is a case of personal preference. However, that doesn't mean there aren't any advantages to choosing thicker boards. Whilst usually more expensive, thicker boards tend to be more hard-wearing and provide better sound reduction. Not only are they better suited to high-traffic areas, but they can also be sanded back and refinished more times. This helps improve the lifespan of solid wood floors even further and enables you to choose a different lacquer or oil each time. Save costs by having the look and feel of a new floor, over and over again, without actually having to replace it for years to come.

Wood Species

Oak

Solid oak flooring is often the most popular choice when it comes to solid wood flooring. Not only because it is easier to source than other wood species, but because solid oak flooring is extremely durable and can withstand the rigors of daily life, making it ideal for high-traffic areas such as living rooms, hallways, and kitchens. It features a tight and prominent grain pattern that is unique to oak and charming to look at. Plus, it is very easy to stain, making it a popular choice for finished or unfinished flooring. Walnut

Walnut is the less popular option of the two and this is mostly because it's a rarer product that is harder to source and therefore more expensive to buy. However, walnut floors do tend to have more variation from plank to plank, so if you're looking for a more uniform appearance, then walnut floors may not be for you.

Solid Wood Flooring Installation Methods

Tongue & Groove

All of our solid wood floors use the tongue and groove installation method. Whilst not as easy as the Click Lok method, it still allows for simple fitting and installation. This method uses compatible boards that fit together like jigsaw pieces before being held in place with glue. This allows for the flooring to be installed without any nails, keeping it aesthetically pleasing and easier to maintain or refinish in the future. Once adhered to the subfloor, solid wood flooring will remain solid and in place for years, giving a strong, quality feel underfoot.

Solid Wood Flooring & Underfloor Heating

Solid wood flooring is one of the few floor types that is not suitable for underfloor heating systems. This includes any water-based underfloor heating because hardwood is a natural product that is susceptible to temperature changes.
