The Stockholm Engineered Smoked Distressed Oak Oiled is a floor that leans heavily into texture and character. The smoked colouring gives the oak a deeper, moodier appearance, while the distressed surface stops it feeling too polished or uniform. It has more of a relaxed, timeworn look, which works particularly well in homes that want warmth and texture without a glossy finish.

The boards are 220mm wide, which gives the floor a broader and more continuous appearance once laid. Wider planks naturally create fewer joins across the room, helping larger areas feel calmer and less visually busy. The boards are also supplied in mixed lengths, which helps create a more natural staggered layout across the floor.

The surface is finished with a combination of distressing and oiling. The distressing creates subtle dips, texture, and variation across the boards, giving the floor a slightly reclaimed feel. The oiled finish enhances the darker smoked tones and allows the grain detail to remain visible rather than hidden beneath a thick coating.

This is mixed grade oak, so you’ll see natural knots, grain patterns, and tonal variation throughout the floor. Those details work particularly well with the smoked colouring, helping the boards feel more authentic and less machine-finished.

Underneath the oak layer is an engineered multi-ply core, designed to improve stability compared to solid wood flooring. Seasonal temperature and humidity changes cause less expansion and contraction, which is why the floor is suitable for water-based underfloor heating and conservatories. Bathrooms and areas with standing water should still be avoided.

The 4mm solid oak wear layer allows the surface to be sanded and refinished up to three times over its lifespan. For most households, that level of restoration is unlikely to be needed for well over a decade, but it gives the floor much longer-term usability than thinner engineered boards.

Installation uses a tongue and groove profile, with boards typically glued together and installed as a floating floor. A 3mm underlay is commonly used beneath the boards to improve sound reduction and insulation. For water-based underfloor heating, a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended, with the floor surface temperature kept below 27°C.

Because this is an oiled wood floor, the surface is not fully sealed. Spills should be cleaned up reasonably quickly to avoid marking. The benefit, however, is that smaller worn areas can often be repaired locally without sanding back the entire floor.

When ordering, allow approximately 10% extra for cuts and wastage, plus an additional 5% for grading variation.

The Stockholm Smoked Distressed Oak has a much more relaxed feel than cleaner lacquered floors. The darker smoked tones and worn surface give it a softer, slightly reclaimed appearance that works brilliantly in older properties and industrial-style interiors alike.
