Types of Flooring Installation

There are two varieties of engineered wood flooring installation available: tongue and groove, and click lok. Both have their own advantages and the type of installation that works best for you will depend on the room in which the flooring will be placed and your own needs. If you’re looking for something that’s easy to fit yourself, you might want to choose click flooring. If you’re placing your engineered wood floor on joists, rather than a solid base, then you’ll need tongue and groove. For more information about engineered wood flooring read our guide here.

Tongue and Groove Installation

Tongue and groove is the traditional system of engineered wood flooring installation. It comprises of one ‘tongue’ cut into the wood which slots into the ‘groove’ of the next board. Tongue and groove flooring can be installed in a variety of different ways. This includes floating the flooring, using glue or using glue and nails. Tongue and groove means that no matter which method of installation you prefer (as each have slightly different results) you can get it.

Advantages

The advantages of tongue and groove flooring include:

  • - Can be fitted over joists
  • - Can be floated, glued or screwed
  • - Is extremely common
  • - Comes in a wide range of board widths, thickness and other varieties
  • - Gap free interlocking

Click Lok System Installation

Click flooring is the second variety of installation that was created more recently than tongue and groove but is now equally popular. A locking shape is cut into the edges of the wood, beneath the top layer, that allows the board to click together. It creates interlocking boards without gaps.

Advantages

Click Lok flooring has several advantages:

  • - The easiest variety of installation
  • - Perfect for DIY
  • - Doesn’t require any glue
  • - Less likely to shift apart than floating tongue and groove
  • - Comes in a wide range of board widths, thickness and other varietiesGap free interlocking
