What is Grey Engineered Wood Flooring?

Grey engineered wood flooring is a great and cost-effective way to get the look of real wood in your home. This type of flooring consists of hardwood veneer layered over plywood or another substrate. The top layer is genuine oak or walnut and is treated with a grey stain to achieve a beautiful, eye-catching colour that contrasts nicely with the surrounding décor. Engineered wood floors look just like solid wood floors once installed but are more durable, easier to install, and affordable.

Does Engineered Wood Flooring Scratch Easily?

Any wood floor can be susceptible to scratches but will withstand daily use, even in busy households. Our engineered wood flooring features a 1.2mm to 6mm layer of oak or walnut, which can be sanded down and refinished if it does become heavily scratched; this means your flooring can look brand new for many years.
You can also choose from a selection of finishes that make the flooring more scratch resistant and alter its appearance.

Is Engineered Wood Flooring Waterproof?

No, engineered wood flooring is made from real wood, so it is not waterproof. Although it can withstand small spillages, you should clean them quickly (within 2-3 hours). If puddles sit for long periods the liquid can seep into the wood, causing warping and discolouration. Lacquer finishing can provide more resistance but does not make the flooring waterproof.

How Long Does Engineered Wood Flooring Need to Acclimatise?

We recommend acclimatising your engineered oak wood flooring to prevent warping as it adjusts to your home's temperature and humidity conditions. While more stable than solid wood flooring, you should acclimatise your flooring for at least 48 hours for the best results.

Engineered Wood Flooring Finishes & Treatments

Unfinished

With unfinished floors, you can choose to finish the flooring as you see fit. This could be using a stain, oil, or lacquer. However, to ensure your flooring is durable, you must finish your boards before you can fit them.

Brushed

A brushed finish is perfect if you want a slight texture to your flooring. Brushed finishes help enhance the natural character of the floor by gently brushing it with a steel comb. This removes the soft grains of the wood and leaves behind only the hard grains. You can then treat the flooring with oil or lacquer.

Handscraped

This effect aims to recreate the traditional look of wood flooring when a professional woodworker would hand finish each board, which gave them unique characteristics. This finish especially looks good on glossy, lacquered flooring where the reflection highlights the waviness of the finish.

Aged

Aged flooring is created by adding light wear to the surface of engineered wood planks, such as bumps and scrapes, to create an established, worn look that creates the illusion of flooring that has been laid for years.

Varying levels of ageing are available, depending upon your style preference, giving an impression of short and longer term wear.

Distressed

This finish is perfect for rustic-themed homes because it is designed to give an old and worn feel to a new hardwood floor. Similar to a brushed finish, except the imperfections are more pronounced.

Lacquered

Lacquer is a varnish that dries to produce a hard, durable finish and acts as an additional wear layer. This makes it a popular choice for many, but particularly ideal for areas with higher foot traffic. Lacquer is available in gloss, matt, or satin matt finishes and can be clear or coloured.

Oiled

Oil seeps into the wood and maintains the surface texture of wood flooring while providing some resistance to damage. However, it does not protect the flooring in the same way that lacquer does because it does not sit on the surface. Oiled flooring will require more maintenance and care over spillages because of this. 

Engineered Wood Flooring Installation Methods

Tongue & Groove

Tongue and groove is the most common method among engineered wood flooring; compatible boards fit together and hold in place with glue. The glue means tongue and groove flooring is free of nails, making it visually appealing and safe to walk barefoot.

Floating floor

You can install tongue and groove flooring onto a layer of underlay as a floating floor. Underlay has many benefits, such as providing sound dampening and protecting your flooring from moisture and temperature changes.

Glue installation

If you have a suitable subfloor (flat and sturdy surface such as concrete with a damp-proof membrane), you can glue your flooring to it with a strong adhesive. Glued installation creates a very stable and sturdy floor, especially with thick boards, such as 20mm wood flooring.
