Can I install wood flooring over underfloor heating?

Yes, you absolutely can install wood flooring over underfloor heating, but with one key rule: it must be a water-based system. Electric underfloor heating tends to heat up too quickly and unevenly, which can cause wood to warp, crack, or shrink over time.

Water-based underfloor heating provides a more gentle, consistent warmth that works beautifully with wood flooring—especially engineered wood, which is more stable than solid wood.

To get the best results, we recommend our specially designed 4mm underfloor heating underlay. It allows efficient heat transfer while also protecting your flooring from excess heat and movement.

Let your flooring acclimatise for at least 48 hours before fitting, and always follow manufacturer guidelines for temperature limits. Gradually increase the temperature when switching the system on for the first time.

With the right prep and materials, you’ll have a cosy, stylish floor that’s built to last.
