Can you install laminate flooring over existing flooring?

Laminate is a floating floor, meaning it isn’t glued or nailed down but instead clicks together and sits on top of an underlay. Because of this, the condition of your existing floor is crucial.

What Types of Flooring Can Laminate Be Installed Over?

✔Tile – As long as the tiles are flat and not cracked, you can lay laminate over them. Just make sure the grout lines aren’t too deep, or they may need filling to create a smooth surface.

✔ Vinyl & Linoleum – These are great bases for laminate, as they’re usually smooth and even. If the vinyl is too soft or cushioned, however, it could cause movement and instability.

✔ Hardwood Flooring – If the existing hardwood is in good condition (not loose, uneven, or warped), you can install laminate over it. However, if it’s badly damaged, it’s best to remove it first.

X Carpet – Laminate should never be installed over carpet, as it’s too soft and unstable. If you have carpet, you’ll need to remove it and ensure the subfloor underneath is suitable.

X Uneven or Damaged Flooring – If the floor is uneven, you’ll need to level it out before installation. Major dips or bumps can cause the laminate to shift, leading to gaps or damage over time.

Key Tips for Installing Laminate Over Existing Flooring:

✔ Check for levelness – Your existing floor should be as flat as possible, with no bumps or dips over 3mm per metre.
✔ Use an underlay – A good-quality underlay helps with sound absorption, comfort, and moisture protection.
✔ Ensure stability – If the existing floor is loose or creaky, fix it before installing laminate.
✔ Clean thoroughly – Remove dust, dirt, or debris before installation to ensure a smooth finish.

If you’re unsure whether your existing floor is suitable, it’s always best to consult a flooring expert!
