How do I prepare my subfloor before laying new flooring?
Proper subfloor preparation is key to a successful flooring installation. Whether you’re laying wood, laminate, or vinyl, the subfloor must be clean, level, and dry to ensure your new floor lasts and looks its best.
Here’s how to prepare your subfloor in a few simple steps:
Clear the Area: Remove any old flooring, nails, staples, and debris. Sweep and vacuum the area thoroughly.
Check for Moisture: Use a moisture meter if you’re working over concrete or in a potentially damp area. If moisture is present, it needs to be addressed before installing flooring—especially wood or laminate.
Inspect for Damage: Look for cracks, holes, or uneven spots. Fill in gaps with floor levelling compound and smooth out bumps.
Ensure It’s Level: Lay a straight edge or spirit level across the floor. If there are dips or rises more than 2–3mm over a metre, they need levelling out.
Dry Completely: Before laying any flooring, allow any applied compounds or cleaning areas to dry fully. A dry base prevents damage to your new floor.
Install Underlay (if needed): For many flooring types—especially laminate or engineered wood—underlay helps with insulation, moisture resistance, and noise reduction.
Top Tip: Rushing this step can lead to creaky floors, gaps, or damage later. Taking time to prep properly is well worth the effort!
