How to fix damaged wood flooring

Wood flooring adds timeless beauty to any home, but damage can occur from daily wear and tear, spills, or even accidents. Thankfully, most issues can be addressed with some effort and the right approach. Here’s a guide to fixing damaged wood flooring.

1. Identify the Type of Damage
Scratches: Common in high-traffic areas or homes with pets.
Water Stains: Often appear as dark or cloudy spots.
Gouges or Chips: These require more extensive repair.
Warping or Buckling: Usually caused by prolonged water exposure.

2. Tackle Minor Scratches
Light Scratches: Buff the area with a soft cloth and apply a wood floor polish or wax.
Deeper Scratches: Use a colour-matched wood repair marker or crayon. For a flawless finish, sand lightly and refinish the area.

3. Repair Water Stains
Gently sand the stained area with fine-grit sandpaper.
Apply wood bleach if the stain is deep. Always test a small area first.
Refinish with matching stain and sealant to blend the repair seamlessly.

4. Fill Gouges or Chips
Use a wood filler that matches your flooring colour.
After the filler dries, sand it down smoothly.
Apply a protective finish to restore the area’s sheen.

5. Fix Warped or Buckled Boards
Remove the damaged planks by gently prying them up.
Ensure the subfloor is dry and level before replacing the wood.
Install new planks and secure them. Finish with sanding and sealing to match the existing floor.

6. Prevent Future Damage
Use area rugs in high-traffic zones and under furniture.
Clean spills immediately to avoid water damage.
Trim pet nails regularly and use pet-friendly floor protection.

Repairs might seem daunting at first, but with patience and the right tools, your wood flooring can look as good as new. For serious damage or if you’re unsure, consider consulting a professional to ensure the repairs are done correctly.
