What’s the difference between a wear layer and a top layer?

The terms "wear layer" and "top layer" are often used in flooring, but they apply to different types of floors.

For vinyl and LVT flooring, the wear layer is the clear, protective coating on the surface. It protects the printed design layer underneath from scratches, scuffs, and general wear. The thicker the wear layer, the more durable the floor—ideal for busy homes or commercial spaces.

In engineered wood flooring, the top layer is actually real hardwood—oak, walnut, or another timber. This is the visible surface of the floor and gives it the natural beauty of solid wood. Unlike vinyl, it can sometimes be sanded and refinished, depending on thickness.

At Flooring365.co.uk, we always highlight wear layer thickness for LVT and top layer thickness for engineered wood, so you can choose the best fit for your home.
