What’s the difference between laminate and vinyl flooring?
1. Material & Construction
Vinyl flooring is made entirely from synthetic materials, mainly PVC (polyvinyl chloride). This makes it highly water-resistant and flexible—ideal for rooms where spills are common, like kitchens or bathrooms.
Laminate flooring has a core made from high-density fibreboard (HDF) and a photographic layer that mimics wood, stone, or tile. While it’s durable, it’s not as water-resistant as vinyl, so it’s better suited for living rooms, bedrooms, or hallways.
2. Water Resistance
Vinyl is the clear winner when it comes to water resistance—it’s completely waterproof! Perfect for busy family homes where accidents will happen (trust me, with three kids and two dogs, I know all about unexpected spills!).
Laminate is water-resistant to a degree but can warp if water seeps into the core. Some newer laminate options offer improved water resistance, but they’re still not as foolproof as vinyl.
3. Comfort & Feel
Vinyl flooring tends to be softer underfoot, especially luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) or planks. Some even come with built-in cushioning—great for little ones crawling around or for those long stints in the kitchen.
Laminate flooring is harder and can feel cooler underfoot, though adding underlay can help make it more comfortable.
4. Durability Both are durable, but it depends on where you’re laying them.
Vinyl handles moisture, heavy foot traffic, and pets like a pro—ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, or utility rooms.
Laminate is tough against scratches and dents, making it great for living areas, but it doesn’t hold up well in damp conditions.
5. Installation & Cost
Both options are budget-friendly and relatively easy to install—many come with click-lock systems perfect for DIY projects.
Vinyl can be slightly more expensive depending on the style and quality, but it’s often worth it for the added waterproofing.
So, which should you choose? If you need something waterproof and versatile, vinyl flooring is your best bet. But if you’re after a more budget-friendly wood-look floor for a living area, laminate flooring could be just right.
