How do I measure my room for new flooring?

Measuring your room accurately is the first step to making sure you order the right amount of flooring—saving both money and hassle.

Here’s how to measure your room in a few easy steps:

  1. Grab Your Tools:
You’ll need a tape measure, a notepad, and a calculator. If possible, sketch the room layout as you go.
  2. Measure Length and Width:
Measure the longest and widest parts of the room in metres. For example, if your room is 4.5m long and 3m wide, multiply them to get 13.5 square metres.
  3. Add Extra for Waste:
Always add 10% extra to your total to account for cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching (especially for herringbone or diagonal layouts). So, for a 13.5m² room, order around 14.2–14.8m² of flooring.
  4. For Irregular Shapes:
Break the space into rectangles or squares, measure each section separately, and then add them together. Don’t forget to include alcoves, bay windows, or wardrobe spaces if flooring will extend into them.
  5. Double-Check Your Measurements:
Measuring twice is better than ordering twice—always recheck before placing your order.

Top Tip:
Most suppliers sell flooring by the pack, so round up to the nearest pack size after adding your waste allowance.
