Can laminate flooring be installed over underfloor heating?
Yes, laminate flooring can be installed over underfloor heating, but it’s important to follow two key rules:
Only water-based underfloor heating systems should be used — never electric systems.
The laminate flooring must be rated as compatible with underfloor heating.
Electric heating systems heat up too quickly and unevenly, which can cause laminate boards to expand, contract or warp. Water-based systems provide a steady, even heat that is much safer for wood-based floors.
Before installation, ensure:
Your chosen laminate flooring is explicitly marked as suitable for underfloor heating
You use a low-tog underlay designed for heat transfer
The floor surface temperature never exceeds 27°C
The laminate is acclimatised in the room for at least 48 hours
The heating system is brought up to temperature gradually after installation
Following these steps will ensure your floor remains stable, comfortable, and under warranty.
