Even though laminate flooring is made to mimic wood or stone floors, it’s actually very different from real wood flooring. Laminate is comprised of four layers: a balance layer, a hardboard layer, a printed film layer, and a transparent layer. Each layer has been purposefully made before being fused together using high levels of heat and intense pressure. Hence the name ‘laminate’.
The printed film (also known as the pattern layer) is what gives the printed effect of wood or stone and has been purposefully made to look like the real deal. Whereas the transparent layer (also known as the wear layer) offers additional protection from scratches, dints, and scuffs. It also helps to protect against staining and discoloration, usually caused by direct sunlight.
The balance and hardboard layers are there to give the flooring stability and durability. The hardboard layer (also known as the core layer or substrate layer) is actually made up of several layers that are pressed together. These layers are usually made from high-density fiberboard (HDF) to create the structural bulk of the flooring, providing strength, thickness, and durability. The balancing layer (also known as the backing layer) is there to help stabilize the floor, prevent movement, and protect both your flooring and sublayer.
Our natural laminate flooring is ideal if you want a beautiful, natural wood effect floor that offers genuine value for money as it more closely resembles a solid wood floor. When browsing our natural laminate wood floors, you’ll notice that each one has been made to mimic a real wood species whether it be Oak, Walnut, or Chestnut. Thanks to the way in which laminate flooring is produced, our laminate floors can be very convincing, matching the colour and texture of real wood floors to provide the perfect budget-friendly option.
Our natural laminate flooring range is highly resistant to scratches and scuffs thanks to the tough protective layer on top. However, this does not make it indestructible. Should your laminate flooring become damaged, it can be more difficult to repair than other floors. This is because the plastic layer cannot be sanded in the same way that wood can. Thankfully, the price of laminate certainly makes up for this. If you want to keep your laminate looking as good as new, then read our laminate wood flooring maintenance guide.
No, none of our natural laminate wood floors are waterproof. If you are looking to install new flooring for your bathroom, then we suggest looking at our LVT range which is 100% waterproof.
In order to get the most from your installation, it’s vital that you prepare for installation correctly by acclimatising your flooring. We recommend that you leave your boards laid flat in the room where you plan to install them. With laminate flooring, you should do this for a minimum of 48 hours before proceeding to installation. This will allow enough time for your floor to adjust to the temperature and humidity conditions of your home.
Our embossed laminate floors have been ‘stamped’ to give the floor a more authentic texture. The texture produced during the embossing process will follow the pattern in the design image. This makes it incredibly difficult to tell that it has been purposely produced that way. However, it looks particularly good with our natural laminate flooring range.
If you really want to trick people into believing that your natural laminate wood floors are real hardwood floors, then you’ll want to consider a handscraped finish. Our handscraped laminate floors have been expertly finished to give your flooring an authentic wood texture and give the impression of a rustic solid wood floor. The handscraped texture complements the knots and grains within our natural laminates perfectly to give each board an individual texture and appearance.
Our rustic laminates are made by adding light wear to the surface of the boards, such as bumps and scrapes, to create an established, worn look. This creates the illusion of flooring that has been laid for years. This type of finish is ideal for those that want a little more character to their natural laminate flooring, with additional knots and grains to give the appearance of solid wood flooring, without the cost.
Smooth laminate is the original laminate flooring finish with a smooth, sleek surface that you would expect to feel. Although these floors still mimic wood closely in appearance, their overall texture will not feel like a real wood floor.
One of the major benefits of laminate floors being printed (other than the price, easy maintenance, and installation) is that they are not limited by design. The printed layer can be made to look like anything, which means you can have a ‘stone floor’ without paying the price for one.
As flooring experts, we often find that our wood effect laminates are the most popular, with more people opting for a budget-friendly option to solid wood flooring. Whether textured, embossed, or smooth, our natural laminate wood flooring looks particularly impressive. If you want flooring that can mimic solid wood whilst also remaining inexpensive to buy or install, then our wood grain laminates will be ideal.
All of our laminate floors, apart from the smooth range, are textured to some degree to make them feel and look authentic.
If you want a smooth laminate floor but still want a more natural and authentic finish, then take a look at our silk range. Our silk finishes are not quite matt, but they’re not glossy or shiny either like our smooth floors. Instead, they reflect under different lighting in the same way that silk does. Most customers find this provides the best of both worlds as it’s visually appealing but doesn’t highlight any imperfections in the way that glossy finishes would.
Deciding whether you want silk or matt flooring can be a tough decision, and for those that are indecisive, our silk matt finish provides the perfect answer. Thanks to the mixture of silk and matt, this flooring finish is ideal for hiding any scuffs or scratches, particularly when paired with one of our more textured laminates.
Extra matt finishes are practically invisible, meaning you won’t be able to tell that a finish has been applied. This allows for your natural laminate wood floors to show off their ‘natural’ beauty whilst still hiding any imperfections until you get the chance to repair them. This is ideal for anyone with pets or children where damage is likely to occur at some point, no matter how durable the floor is.
Without a finish applied, solid wood floors would not reflect at all under lighting. If you’re hoping to mimic this with your natural laminate flooring, then you’ll want to opt for a matt finish that stops lights from bouncing off the surface of your floor. This will also help massively with any imperfections, where lighting would normally highlight damage such as scuffs or scrapes. Whilst not as matt as our extra matt range, it’s still a great choice for those wanting a more natural and rustic look to their flooring, rather than a sleek and contemporary finish like our smooth laminates.
Apart from handscraped, silverfrost is probably one of our most unique flooring finishes. It provides beautiful silver tones and hues throughout the flooring, giving a frost-like appearance.
Generally speaking, board thickness is a case of personal preference, however, thicker boards, whilst usually more expensive do tend to be more hard wearing and provide a slightly improved sound reduction performance, which should be considered in upstairs apartments or bedrooms, for example. As well as this, thicker boards are usually more suited to higher traffic areas, where they can withstand greater use.
Click Lok flooring has a profiled edge and interlocking fitting system, meaning it can be laid more easily, and relatively hassle-free.
The Click Lok system allows you to simply push, drop and click your flooring into place. We find that this method makes installation simple for DIY enthusiasts and novices alike.
If you’re considering the Click Lok method, it’s important to think about the underlying surface. Uneven surfaces make Click Lok much more difficult to fit and keep in place, which often means the need for levelling underlay.
