What is Parquet Flooring?

Parquet Flooring is quite possibly the best flooring option despite the somewhat more complicated manufacturing process. Parquet flooring consists of thin pieces of wood and the overall appearance is very sophisticated and creative.
Parquet flooring’s most common species used in manufacture are: oak, walnut, maple, cherry and sometimes mahogany or other exotic hardwoods. Apart from the wood species used in making your parquet flooring, you should also decide whether you want engineered or solid parquet flooring. Solid consists of solid pieces of timber whereas engineered have layers of wood with the hardwood veneer at the top; however, whichever choice you make there is no difference in the final look of the fitted parquet flooring.

Why should I choose engineered parquet flooring?

If you are considering replacing your current floor with something more eye-catching and bolder; Parquet flooring will be the perfect choice.

Parquet block flooring can transform any space from a rustic cottage to a modern apartment. Parquet blocks can be laid in a variety of patterns that certainly add personality to any room. Parquet blocks are very versatile, and it is also compatible with underfloor heating. The flooring is certainly very stable because it is made of three layers of wood at a 90-degree angle to each other to reduce movement in the wood. The top layer is made of carefully selected wood and is named the wear layer and can be sanded if required. Underneath the wear layer lays an advanced body that absorbs the impact and guarantees the high stability of the flooring.

Below the advanced body is a sheet of ecologically certified wood that gives each board the perfect balance. Since the bottom layers of wood are invisible, they can be made of cheaper types of wood. This often means that parquet is cheaper than solid wood flooring.

Parquet Flooring Types

Engineered Wood

Engineered wood flooring is a composite wood flooring, made up of structural sub layers (usually plywood) and a real wood top layer, offering a finish identical to solid wood at a fraction of the cost. Engineered wood flooring can also be resanded throughout it's lifetime to replenish the overall finish when needed.

Solid Wood

Solid wood flooring is made from a single species of wood, offering an authentic real wood finish. Solid wood flooring requires fixing to a subfloor using flooring adhesive.

Vinyl (LVT)

LVT Vinyl flooring is an ideal choice for kitchens and bathrooms, as it's water resistant and easy to fit. However, expert finishes mean LVT is now becoming popular in any room of the house, offering easy fitting, a crisp finish and wide range of styles.

Laminate

Laminate parquet, such as our Valore Laminate Range is an ideal choice for those looking for parquet flooring on a budget. With a decorative photo top layer and hard wearing protection, laminate parquet offers a striking finish that's hard wearing and easy to maintain.

Parquet Flooring Finishes & Treatments

Unfinished

Unfinished flooring is just that, essentially, wood has been cut and shaped into planks with no other finishing process such as oiling or lacquer.

Whilst unfinished flooring does require treatment or protection after fitting and before use, it does offer the benefit of a wider range of styles available, thanks to the availability of oils, waxes or stains.

Brushed

Brushed flooring is finished using a steel wire wool during production, removing the upper layer of wood grain, leaving a textured finish. Brushed floors offer a textured surface with enhanced grain and pattern.

Depth of texture varies, depending upon the level of brushing and wood type.

Lacquered

Lacquer is a protection finish applied to flooring to reduce the damage caused by spillages, effectively creating a thin surface layer which prevents liquids seeping into wood grains.

Often considered the modern varnish equivalent, lacquered flooring is ideal for heavier traffic areas that need a higher protection level.

Oiled

Oil provides a deeper protection than lacquer, by seeping into wood grain, enhancing the aesthetic of wood flooring, however, as there is no surface layer created, oiled flooring usually requires greater maintenance and care over spillages.

Oiled flooring is preferred by those looking for a natural, ‘untreated’ look, whilst still offering some level of protection and longevity.

Parquet Flooring Styles

Herringbone

Herringbone is a slightly easier parquet flooring style to fit, usually by connecting the short end of one board to the long end of another. This interlocking pattern gives a 'zig zag' finish, which adds interest to any room, elevating your flooring.

Chevron

Chevron parquet, whilst more difficult to fit, perhaps offers the most interesting finish of all flooring types. Boards are connected at a 45 degree angle, offering a striking finish of contrasting rows.

Parquet Flooring Thickness

Board Thickness

Generally speaking, board thickness is a case of personal preference, however, thicker boards, whilst usually more expensive do tend to be more hard wearing and provide a slightly improved sound reduction performance, which should be considered in upstairs apartments or bedrooms, for example. As well as this, thicker boards are usually more suited to higher traffic areas, where they can withstand greater use.

Engineered Parquet & Underfloor Heating

If you're using a water based underfloor heating system it's important that your flooring isn't too thick to prevent transfer of heat into the room. We recommend using flooring with a maximum board thickness of 15MM with 4/4.5MM Underfloor Heating Suitable Underlay.

Wear Layer (Engineered Parquet Only)

Wear layer refers to the top, aesthetic, surface layer of real wood, which gives the engineered flooring its look. Thicker wear layers, whilst usually more expensive, offer greater durability and the option to sand more frequently, meaning flooring can be refreshed more times before replacing.

Most engineered wood floors, regardless of the thickness of the wear layer, will provide years of use, maintaining their impressive appearance.

Sanding Guide

In most cases, sanding the top layer of engineered wood flooring will remove up to 1MM of surface, with a minimum of 1MM needed left for protection. As a rough guide, here’s the number of times a floor can be sanded, based on the initial wear layer thickness:

• 3mm: 1-2 times
• 4mm: 2-3 times
• 5mm: 3-4 times
• 6mm: 4-5 times

(Please note: Sanding times is a guide only, the number of times a floor can be sanded will vary on an individual basis.)

Parquet Wood Flooring Installation Methods

Bond Down

Solid wood parquet flooring is fixed to the floor using a special bond, such as TREMCO Flooring Adhesive. This installation method provides an ultra secure, fixed finish that will stay in place for the lifetime of your floor. We recommend careful preperation of your sub floor for the best results.

Click Lok System

Click Lok flooring has a profiled edge which creates a glue free, interlocking fitting system, meaning it can be laid more easily, relatively hassle free.

The Click Lok system, used predominantly in engineered and laminate flooring is intended to make laying flooring easier for any DIY enthusiast, by simply pushing, dropping or clicking boards into place.

If you’re considering Click Lok it’s important to think about the underlying surface on which your new parquet flooring will be laid. Uneven surfaces make Click Lok much more difficult to fit and keep in place, which often means the need for levelling underlay.

Tongue & Groove

A traditional method of fitting flooring, Tongue & Groove is a tried and tested installation type that involves tesselating profiled edges together using a glue, such as PVA.

Whilst it can be slower to fit than Click Lok, some customers prefer the peace of mind a glued, tongue and groove flooring provides.
