What is Grey Solid Wood Flooring?

Solid wood flooring is the most luxurious wood flooring you can buy as it is made from 100% solid wood. The wood is then finished to the desired colour and texture using oil, lacquer, or stains. You can also buy our solid wood flooring unfinished to achieve a completely unique look if required. In comparison to other wood flooring, nothing quite feels like real, solid wood flooring. It is sturdy, feels significant under foot and it maintains its value. This means solid wood flooring is also suitable for areas of very high traffic because it is generally thicker than engineered wood flooring.

Our grey solid wood flooring has become particularly popular thanks to all the beautiful different hues and shades, making it a beautiful addition to both modern and rustic styled homes. 

Does Solid Wood Flooring Scratch Easily?

Any solid wood floor will be susceptible to scratches but will withstand daily use, even in busy households. One of the most beneficial qualities of solid wood flooring is that it can also be sanded down and refinished. Unlike engineered flooring which will only allow you to sand back the wear layer, solid flooring is real wood throughout. Due to the solid wood composition throughout, you can sand and refinish as many times as you'd like, essentially until you run out of floor. We advise always choosing a thicker wood floor if you plan to do this as it will give you more wood to work with. Is Solid Wood Flooring Waterproof?

No, like any wood product, our solid wood flooring is not waterproof. You must wipe any spilled liquids as quickly as possible to avoid warping or discolouration. For more information on how to care for solid wood floors, visit our maintenance guide.

How long does Solid Wood Flooring Need to Acclimatise?

Solid wood flooring requires the most time to acclimate due to its solid wood composition. At Flooring365, we recommend that you let your floor acclimatise for a minimum of 7 days to get the best results after installation.

Solid Wood Flooring Finishes & Treatments

Unfinished

Unfinished floors are ideal for designers and homeowners alike. Offering the ability to finish the flooring any way you see fit, using a stain, oil, or lacquer. However, you must always ensure that your solid wood floors are finished before installation. Otherwise, your flooring will be extremely susceptible to scratches and spillages. Finishes are there to provide the durability and protection that your solid wood flooring requires.

Oiled 

Oil seeps into the wood, rather than sitting above it. An ideal option if you want to maintain the surface texture of your solid wood floors, whilst still providing some resistance to damage. However, oiled floors will require more maintenance and care over spillages because oil doesn’t create a surface layer in the same way a lacquer would.

Lacquered 

Lacquer is often a popular choice for solid wood flooring because it offers additional durability against scratches and liquids by creating a hard durable finish. If you would still like to keep the texture of solid wood flooring, you may want to opt for a lacquered and brushed finish. This will bring back some of the natural texture of solid wood flooring without compromising on durability.

Brushed 

Brushed finishes help enhance the natural character of the floor by gently brushing it with a steel comb. This removes the soft grains of the wood and leaves behind only the hard grains. You can then treat the flooring with oil or lacquer.

Handscraped

This finish is completely unique to any of the other finishes and leaves behind a beautiful wavy texture on the boards. This imitates the underfoot feeling of an old wooden floor and gives it a lovely warm, rustic appearance. To achieve this finish, a professional craftsman hand-finishes each board to give each one an entirely unique and individual appearance. However, this does make this one of our more expensive finishes as it cannot be achieved by machinery.

Distressed

This creates a unique surface that is similar to a brushed finish, except with a more pronounced texture. It is created by brushing, scraping and then treating the floor. 

Solid Wood Flooring Thickness

Board Thickness

Generally speaking, board thickness is a case of personal preference. However, that doesn't mean there aren't any advantages to choosing thicker boards. Whilst usually more expensive do tend to be more hard wearing and provide a slightly improved sound reduction performance. Not only are they more suited to higher traffic areas of the home thanks to their additional durability, but they can also be sanded back and refinished more times. This helps improve the lifespan of solid wood floors even further and enables you to choose a different lacquer or oil each time. Save costs by having the look and feel of a new floor, over and over again, without actually having to replace it for years to come.

Solid Wood Flooring Installation Methods

Tongue & Groove

All of our solid wood floors use the tongue and groove installation method. Whilst not as easy as the click lok method, it still allows for simple fitting and installation. This method uses compatible boards that fit together like jigsaw pieces before being held in place with glue. This allows for the flooring to be installed without any nails, keeping it aesthetically pleasing and easier to maintain or refinish in the future. Once adhered to the subfloor, solid wood flooring will remain solid and in place for years, giving a strong, quality feel underfoot.
