Solid wood flooring is a timeless and luxurious choice for any home. It is durable, easy to maintain, and can be refinished multiple times to extend its lifespan.
In comparison to other floors, nothing quite feels like hardwood flooring. The creation of solid wood flooring involves a meticulous process that transforms raw timber into elegant and durable flooring planks. This process encompasses several key stages, starting with the harvesting of the hardwood whether that be oak, walnut, or birch.
At Flooring365, we have a wide range of solid wood flooring, with numerous different colours and styles to choose from. However, if you have the budget for it, our solid wood flooring over £50 features some of our most durable high-quality wood floors. From wider or thicker boards to premium finishes. These floors are perfect for long-term homeowners looking to add value to their home.
No, unfortunately not. Solid wood flooring is one of the few floor types that cannot cope with underfloor heating systems. This is because naturally occurring materials, such as wood can be extremely sensitive to high levels of heat, or changes in temperature. Therefore, if you want real wood flooring, with underfloor heating, we suggest taking a look at our engineered wood flooring range. Engineered wood floors include a wear layer made completely from solid wood. However, the core layers are much more resistant to heat and heat spikes. This means they can be installed alongside water-based underfloor heating systems.
There are many factors that can contribute towards wood flooring being considered luxury wood flooring. From the finish applied to the thickness and width of the boards. Thicker and wider boards are often considered more luxurious since they require larger logs to produce. This makes them more difficult to source and it also makes the milling process more time-consuming. Both of which add to the production cost and therefore the price of the floor. Since they are less common and often seen in high end establishments, they are often considered as luxury floors. However, wide boards aren’t purely about aesthetics. They also offer additional durability and stability in comparison to narrow boards. Other attributes commonly associated with only the most luxurious floors include:
Solid wood flooring is relatively easy to clean and only requires a regular vacuum and mop, as with most floors. However, you will need to use water sparingly and not leave any sitting around on the floor for long periods. This is because solid wood flooring is susceptible to water damage. How you decide to transition your flooring between rooms will depend upon multiple factors, including:
Based on the above, you can decide on the optimal choice for your home. Whether that is sanding one of the floors slightly, adding a transition, opting for underlay, or skipping a transition altogether.
Unfinished floors come completely untouched and have not had any stains, oils, or lacquers applied to them. This allows you to finish your hardwood tongue & groove flooring however you see fit. There are numerous different finishes out on the market and each one has its pros and cons. There’s also a wide range of different colours and styles such as invisible, matt, or gloss allowing you to get creative.
If you are considering an unfinished floor, please note that it is best practice to apply your finish before installation.
Brushed finishes have a much more enhanced grain and texture to them. To achieve this look, we brush the floor using steel wire wool to remove the thin upper layers during the manufacturing process. Once the brushing process is complete, the flooring is ready to be lacquered.
Lacquer is a clear protective coating that is applied to the surface of the wood. It provides a glossy, satin, or matt finish while protecting the wood from stains, spills, and general wear and tear. The lacquer forms a hard, durable layer that helps to maintain the beauty and integrity of the wood flooring. This builds up a smooth and even finish that enhances the natural beauty of the wood while providing excellent protection.
All of our brushed floors (regardless of the finish applied) go through the exact same brushing process as stated above. With our brushed & oiled floors, the oil penetrates the wood fibres, nourishing and moisturizing them. This helps to prevent the wood from drying out, cracking, or warping over time. The oil also provides a durable finish that helps to protect the wood from stains, spills, and general wear and tear. However, when it comes to protection from liquids and spillages, lacquers perform much better than oils.
Handscraped finishes give each board its own individual character to create a worn and rustic look. The wavy surface of handscraped floors is extremely unique and looks especially good on glossy, lacquered boards. It’s also a great option for anyone with pets as it can hide and conceal any slight damage much easier.
Lacquered finishes create a protective layer to help reduce damage from spillages, liquids, and light scuffs. This makes them ideal for high-traffic areas. However, we still recommend cleaning any spillages as soon as possible to keep your flooring looking its best.
Oiled finishes flow deep into the wood grain to enhance the floor’s appearance and offer deep protection. However, unlike lacquered finishes, oiled flooring does not create a surface layer and therefore requires a higher level of maintenance. We find that most customers choose an oiled finish due to its striking colours and wood grain textures, rather than purely for protection.
Generally speaking, board thickness is a case of personal preference. However, thicker boards do tend to be more hard-wearing and provide a slightly improved sound reduction performance. As well as this, thicker boards are usually more suited to higher traffic areas, where they can withstand greater use. Thicker boards also allow more opportunities to sand and refinish your flooring, expanding its lifespan even further.
Our entire range of solid wood flooring uses the tongue and groove installation method. Whilst not as easy as the Click Lok method, it still allows for simple fitting and installation. This method uses compatible boards that fit together like jigsaw pieces before being held in place with glue. This allows for the flooring to be installed without any nails, making it easier to maintain and refinish in future. Once adhered to the subfloor, your hardwood flooring will remain in place for years, giving a strong, quality feel underfoot.
The most popular way to install solid wood flooring is to bond it directly to the subflooring using a flexible adhesive. However, you will need to acclimatise your solid wood flooring before proceeding to installation. Real wood flooring is exactly what it states and therefore, it will be susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity. These changes can cause your floor to contract or expand which is why it is important to acclimatise your floor so that it can become accustomed to its new environment.
With real wood flooring, we recommend leaving it to acclimatise for at least 7 days before you install the flooring in your home.
Hardwood flooring is a natural living product and as your room changes temperature, as humidity rises and falls, solid wood will shrink and expand. To prevent any issues from this, you should always leave approximately a 1/2" gap between the flooring and the wall.
If you plan on installing the flooring yourself, please refer to our Solid Wood Flooring Installation Guide for more information.
While most of our wood floors can be installed with a water-based underfloor heating system, our solid wood floors cannot. Hardwood flooring is very susceptible to temperature changes and having a heating system so close could lead to issues. If you want the look of solid wood but are determined to have underfloor heating, we suggest that you take a look at our engineered wood flooring range.
