Engineered wood flooring is made from multiple layers of plywood for additional durability but the top layer is solid wood. Due to its composition, it has the added benefits of higher resistance to temperature and humidity changes, making it a fantastic alternative to traditional solid wood floors. Once fitted, you won’t be able to tell the difference thanks to the top layer of Oak or Walnut.
Our 10mm engineered wood flooring features some of our thinnest boards therefore will not offer as much in terms of under-foot feel or sound absorption. However, they are much less expensive to show for this and they also have some added benefits that thick floorboards just cannot compete with. For starters, our 10mm engineered flooring is ideal for use with underfloor heating as it will allow the heat to pass through and heat your home. Whereas thicker boards will end up trapping the heat beneath your floor.
You may also want to opt for thinner flooring, depending on where you plan to place your flooring, and the rooms that surround it. For example, if you plan to install engineered wood flooring in your dining room but the adjoining living room has a shallow carpet, then the height differences from room to room may start to look awkward.
Any wood floor can be susceptible to scratches but will withstand daily use, even in busy households. If heavily damaged, our engineered wood and solid wood flooring options can be sanded down and refinished. However, we wouldn’t advise this with our 10mm engineered wood flooring range as there is less veneer to work with.
If damage could be an issue for you, there is a selection of finishes that make the flooring more scratch resistant as well as alter its appearance. Alternatively, look at our thicker engineered wood floors. Ideally, you want one that has a minimum of 3mm wear layer to enable you to sand and refinish 1-2 times.
No, even our 10mm engineered wood flooring boards feature at least 1.2mm of solid wood veneer therefore they are not waterproof. To avoid damaging your flooring, you should clean any spillages up quickly, or within 2-3 hours at least. The longer you allow puddles to sit, the more likely it is that warping or discolouration could occur.
Any solid wood (even minor amounts) could warp, expand, retract, or move due to different temperatures. To avoid this from happening it is vital that you let your flooring acclimatise before installing. We recommend leaving your flooring in the room where it will be placed for a minimum of 48 hours before proceeding to installation. This will allow enough time for your floor to adjust to the temperature and humidity conditions of your home.
Unfinished floors are not stained, oiled, or lacquered, allowing you to finish the flooring as you see fit. To ensure your flooring is durable, you must finish your boards before you can fit them.
Brushed finishes offer a greater texture and more depth to the surface of the floor. To achieve this look, we brush the floor using steel wire wool to remove the thin upper layers during the manufacturing process. This leaves behind an enhanced grain and texture. The level of depth and texture varies, depending on the flooring type and level of brushing.
Handscraped finishes offer a brilliant alternative to aged flooring, giving individual character to each board that looks worn and rustic thanks to the unusual wavy texture. This finish especially looks good on glossy, lacquered boards where the reflection highlights the waviness of the finish. It’s also a great option for anyone with pets as it can hide and conceal any slight damage much easier.
Aged flooring has a unique look that is full of character and has a very rustic feel to it. Varying levels of aged finishes are available, depending upon your style preference, giving an impression of short and long-term wear.
Distressed floors are often favoured by customers that want a mega-rustic, lived-in, traditional look. The imperfections of a distressed floor are more pronounced than in brushed and handscraped finishes because they fully embrace dents and scratches to create a truly antique appearance.
We offer a wide range of lacquered finishes including gloss, matt, and satin matt. All of our lacquered options create a protective layer to help reduce damage from spillages, liquids, and light scuffs. Lacquered flooring is ideal for heavier traffic and offers a high level of protection. However, we still recommend cleaning any spillages as soon as possible to keep your flooring looking its best.
Oils flow deep into the wood grain, enhancing the floor’s appearance and offering deep protection. However, unlike Lacquered finishes, oiled flooring does not create a surface layer and therefore requires a higher level of maintenance, with greater care needed to manage spillages. We find that most customers choose oiled engineered wood flooring due to its striking colours and wood grain textures, rather than purely for protection.
Generally speaking, board thickness is a case of personal preference, however, thicker boards, whilst usually more expensive do tend to be more hard wearing and provide a slightly improved sound reduction performance, which should be considered in upstairs apartments or bedrooms, for example. As well as this, thicker boards are usually more suited to higher traffic areas, where they can withstand greater use.
If you're using a water based underfloor heating system it's important that your flooring isn't too thick to prevent transfer of heat into the room. We recommend using flooring with a maximum board thickness of 15MM with 4/4.5MM Underfloor Heating Suitable Underlay.
Wear layer refers to the top, aesthetic, surface layer of real wood, which gives the engineered flooring its look. Thicker wear layers, whilst usually more expensive, offer greater durability and the option to sand more frequently, meaning flooring can be refreshed more times before replacing.
Most engineered wood floors, regardless of the thickness of the wear layer, will provide years of use, maintaining their impressive appearance.
In most cases, sanding the top layer of engineered wood flooring will remove up to 1MM of surface, with a minimum of 1MM needed left for protection. As a rough guide, here’s the number of times a floor can be sanded, based on the initial wear layer thickness:
(Please note: Sanding times is a guide only, the number of times a floor can be sanded will vary on an individual basis.)
Tongue and groove is the most traditional method for installing engineered wood flooring; compatible boards fit together and hold in place with glue. The glue means tongue and groove flooring is free of nails, making it visually appealing and safe to walk barefoot.
You can install tongue and groove flooring onto a layer of underlay as a floating floor. Underlay has many benefits, such as providing sound dampening and protecting your flooring from moisture and temperature changes.
If you have a suitable subfloor (flat and sturdy surface such as concrete with a damp-proof membrane), you can glue your flooring to it with a strong adhesive. Glued installation creates a very stable and sturdy floor, especially with thicker boards.
Click Lok flooring has a profiled edge which creates a glue free, interlocking fitting system, meaning it can be laid more easily, relatively hassle free. The Click Lok system, used predominantly in engineered and laminate flooring is intended to make laying flooring easier for any DIY enthusiast, by simply pushing, dropping, or clicking boards into place.
If you’re considering Click Lok it’s important to think about the underlying surface on which your new engineered flooring will be laid. Uneven surfaces make Click Lok much more difficult to fit and keep in place, which often means the need for levelling underlay.
