Description

The Glanwell Elite Engineered Natural Oak Brushed and Oiled is a 20mm engineered oak floor with a substantial 6mm wear layer, designed for homes that want a more solid feel underfoot with the long-term benefits of engineered construction. The wider planks help create a more open layout, while the engineered core reduces movement caused by changes in temperature and humidity. It’s also suitable for water-based underfloor heating, making it a practical option for larger living spaces and open-plan areas.

Each board is 190mm wide, which reduces the number of joins across the floor and creates a cleaner, more spacious appearance once installed. The wider format works particularly well in medium and larger rooms where you want the flooring to feel less broken up.

The surface is brushed and oiled. Brushing lifts the natural grain slightly, creating a subtle texture underfoot that feels closer to real timber. The oiled finish enhances the natural tones and variation within the oak without adding a heavy surface coating, giving the floor a more natural appearance overall.

This is mixed grade oak, so you’ll see knots, grain variation, and colour differences between boards. These natural features give the floor more depth and character once laid.

This is a fixed length product, so boards are supplied in set sizes rather than mixed lengths. Each pack may include starter boards to help you stagger the layout for a more natural finish, helping to reduce visible repetition across the floor.

The 6mm solid oak wear layer allows the floor to be sanded and refinished up to five times. In most homes, this won’t be needed for many years, but it does give the floor a significantly longer lifespan than thinner wear layers. Combined with the 20mm thickness and engineered multi-ply construction, it creates a particularly durable and stable build.

Installation uses a tongue and groove system, with boards designed to be glued together. It’s typically installed as a floating floor over underlay, which helps improve insulation and reduce noise. A 3mm underlay is commonly used, while a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended when installing over water-based underfloor heating, with a maximum surface temperature of 27°C.

Because this is an oiled wood floor, the surface is not fully sealed. Spills should be wiped up promptly to prevent marking, and it’s not suitable for bathrooms or areas with standing water. The benefit is that worn or scratched areas can be repaired locally by sanding and re-oiling, rather than refinishing the entire floor. Occasional maintenance oiling will help keep the surface protected over time.

When ordering, allow around 10% extra for wastage and cuts, plus an additional 5% to account for natural variation in grading.

Why We Love It

We like the Glanwell Elite Natural Oak Brushed and Oiled because it has the feel of a much heavier, more traditional wood floor while still offering the stability of engineered construction. The thicker wear layer also gives it genuine long-term durability.

Richard, our Product Expert, recommends the Glanwell Elite because:

Pet Friendly: Brushed texture helps soften the look of light scratches

Family Friendly: Mixed grade oak blends in everyday wear and dents

Spill Resistant (with care): Oiled finish offers protection, but spills should be wiped promptly

Long Lifespan: 6mm wear layer allows multiple sanding and refinishing cycles

  • Each board has a 6mm layer of wood veneer that enables you to sand down and refinish the surface up to five times.
  • The flooring has been finished with a brush to create a textured feel.
  • Engineered wood flooring like this is very resilient to temperature and humidity changes, making it suitable for most rooms, including conservatories. The only exception is the bathroom.
  • Each board is manufactured with a tongue and groove profile, so each board can simply be glued together.
  • This engineered oak is typically installed as a floating floor with a 5mm underlay on the subfloor, providing protection from dampness and serving as a sound barrier and insulator.
  • This product has a mixed grade, so it will contain some knots, which is typical for natural wood.
  • Please note, an oiled finish isn't impermeable and might not be ideal for spill-prone areas
  • Each pack may contain starter boards to allow you to stagger your layout.
  • Please keep in mind that the industry standard includes 10% for wastage and cut-offs, and 5% for visual grading. Make sure to factor this into your calculations when ordering.
Customer Questions
What is engineered wood flooring?
Engineered wood is real wood on top, with stable layers beneath.
Do I need to acclimatise my wood flooring before fitting?
Yes, you must acclimatise your wood flooring before installation. For engineered wood, allow 48–72 hours; for solid wood, give it at least 7 days. Keep the packs flat, unopened, and in a room with stable conditions.
Can I install wood flooring over underfloor heating?
Yes, you can install wood flooring over underfloor heating—but it must be a water-based system. Never use electric underfloor heating with wood flooring, as it can overheat and damage the boards.
Do I need expansion gaps when fitting wood flooring?
Yes, always leave an expansion gap of 10–15mm around the perimeter of your wood flooring. This allows the wood to expand and contract naturally with changes in temperature and humidity.
Can engineered wood flooring be sanded?
Yes, engineered wood flooring can be sanded, but only if the top wear layer is thick enough—usually at least 3mm. Thinner layers may not allow for sanding without damage.
