What is 10mm Laminate Flooring?

Laminate flooring features a wooden fiber core, printed with a wood image and a transparent protective layer on top; it is a cost-effective alternative to solid and engineered wood as it does not have an expensive solid wood veneer. As 10mm Laminate flooring is one of the thickest that we offer, it is also one of the most expensive. Does Laminate Flooring Scratch Easily?

Any wood floor can be susceptible to scratches but will withstand the usual pressures of daily use, even in busy households. You can also choose from a selection of finishes that alter the appearance and make scratches less noticeable.

Is Laminate Flooring Waterproof?

Contrary to popular belief, laminate is not actually made from plastic. It is made from High Density Fibreboard (HDF). Due to the wood composition, it is not waterproof. However, it is water resistant and will still handle contact with liquids much better than a solid wood floor. Even with that in mind, we still advise that you wipe up spillages quickly to avoid long-term damage from absorption.

How long does Laminate Flooring Need to Acclimatise?

We recommend acclimatising your laminate flooring to prevent warping as it adjusts to the temperature and humidity conditions of your home. To do this, you must leave your flooring in the room in which you are going to install it. Whilst more stable than solid wood flooring, you should still allow a minimum of 48 hours for your laminate floor to acclimatise.

Laminate Flooring Finishes & Treatments

Because laminate flooring has a printed image layer, there is a larger variety of finishes possible than with other types of wood flooring, some aim to simulate solid wood, and others are less conventional.

Stone Effect

Laminate flooring can also be made to look like stone tiles, providing endless design options.

Embossed / Wood Grain

An embossed finish attempts to simulate the texture of the wood (or stone) image that is printed on the flooring; rather than being smooth, these boards have the same texture you would feel on the surface of solid wood or stone tiles.

Matt

Matt is a smooth, clear finish on top of the printed image; because it is matt there is minimal reflection.

Extra Matt

Extra matt attempts to have zero reflection, giving the flooring a slightly chalky appearance. This type of finish is also much less likely to show scratches and other small imperfections.

Silk

This finish creates a subtle shine, but without all the maintenance and upkeep of a high gloss floor. Silk is a light gloss finish, somewhere in between our silk matt, and smooth finishes.

Silk Matt

If you can’t decide between silk or matt, then this finish is for you. Silk matt has a mixture of gloss and no gloss areas. The varying gloss level gives it a contrast that accentuates the texture of the floor.

Silverfrost

This finish highlights the flooring texture by running a subtle silvery tone through the grains.

Smooth

Smooth does not have a deep grain structure, instead, it is a more uniform, gloss finish.  This type of flooring will look great in calculated, modern rooms.

Handscraped

A handscraped finish imitates the way solid wood flooring was traditionally finished before specialised machines could make perfect finishes. The imperfections in the finish add character in the way that it reflects light.

Rustic

This type of finish looks to imitate the worn character of older wood flooring, perfect for rooms that you want to look cosy and lived in.

Textured

This is a broad term for finishes that have some form of texture; like an embossed finish, while not quite as worn as a rustic or handscraped finish.

Click System

Underlay

Underlay is a layer of material that goes between the floor and the subfloor, evening out the surface and providing numerous benefits such as sound absorption, insulation, and improved underfoot feel. It is important that you have underlay with laminate flooring because it is not as strong and durable as other flooring types. Having underlay will help to keep your laminate in place securely and limit the chances of damage to your flooring as well as providing an even surface.
