Tongue & groove parquet flooring refers to any type of parquet flooring that uses the tongue & groove installation method. This is regardless of whether the parquet is engineered or solid and herringbone or chevron.
Our tongue & groove parquet floors have all been designed to last, so they won’t scratch easily. However, that’s not to say that they’re indestructible but with proper maintenance and care, these floors will survive even the toughest of households. If scratches are a huge concern, we advise that you choose an oiled finish rather than lacquer since these are easier to resurface and refinish if required.
Not all tongue & groove parquet flooring is waterproof, no. However, we have plenty of parquet flooring in our LVT range, all of which are 100% waterproof and suitable for bathrooms. While our LVT floors do not use the tongue & groove installation method, it’s certainly worth considering in rooms where spillages or high levels of humidity are likely.
The acclimatisation period required will depend on the floor type that you choose. For our engineered parquet flooring, you should wait at least 48-72 hours before proceeding to installation. Whereas we advise waiting a minimum of 5-7 days for our solid parquet floors.
It’s no secret that parquet flooring is slightly trickier to lay than traditional wood flooring planks. However, the tongue & groove profiles make it a little easier by allowing the boards to simply slot into place. These boards are then secured using adhesion, ensuring that your floor won’t budge under the pressure of foot traffic.
Our engineered parquet flooring is made up of structural sublayers (usually plywood) and a solid wood top layer, offering a finish identical to solid wood at a fraction of the cost. Our engineered wood flooring can also be re-sanded throughout its lifetime to replenish the overall finish when needed.
Traditionally, all parquet floors would be made from solid wood. While there are now many options, our solid wood parquet remains extremely popular, offering an authentic real wood finish.
LVT vinyl flooring is an ideal choice for kitchens and bathrooms, as it's water-resistant and easy to fit. However, expert finishes mean LVT is now becoming popular in any room of the house, offering easy fitting, a crisp finish, and a wide range of styles. So, it seems only fitting that we offer vinyl parquet flooring, providing a stylish yet timeless flooring solution.
Laminate parquet stands out for its remarkable durability, offering an extensive selection of authentic wood designs and finishes. Not only that, but laminate parquet is exceptionally budget-friendly.
Our tongue and groove parquet floors are available in several different finishes from simple unfinished planks to stunning, characterful brushed and oiled boards.
Unfinished flooring is just that; a simple, pared-back floor type that hasn’t been treated, aged, or stylised using any processes; creating a simple product that is ready for you to finish.
Our customers choose unfinished flooring if they’re undecided on any other finish, or, if they have a bespoke finish in mind, which can be achieved with aftermarket oils, varnishes, or lacquers.
‘Brushing’ involves scraping away the softer grains of wood on the top layers of solid or engineered wood during manufacturing, leaving an enhanced wood grain and a more characterful finish. This gives the flooring more texture and a greater definition between the higher grains and recessed areas.
An oiled floor can be characterised by its rich, deep texture and striking wood grain. Unlike lacquer which sits on top, oil ‘seeps’ into many layers of wooden flooring, enhancing the overall aesthetic. However, oiled floors are also more susceptible to water damage than lacquered floors. Therefore, we recommend that you clean any spillages quickly to prevent water from seeping into the sublayers of your floor.
Available in gloss and matt finishes, lacquer creates a protective top layer on both solid and engineered wood parquet which helps protect against spills and scratches. It also enhances the overall finish of your parquet flooring.
Oak is the most popular wood species across all wood flooring types, including parquet flooring. This is mostly thanks to its perfect balance of quality, durability, and stunning, characterful looks.
We have a wide range of oak engineered parquet flooring and solid oak parquet to suit all styles and budgets.
Walnut parquet is favoured for its dark, rich, and deep wood grain that contrasts well in light rooms, or compliments darker finished styles.
Whilst not as popular as oak flooring, we’re big fans, thanks to the unique, ‘outside of the box’ looks walnut brings to any room.
Herringbone is a slightly easier parquet flooring style to fit, usually by connecting the short end of one board to the long end of another. This interlocking pattern gives a 'zig zag' finish, which adds interest to any room, elevating your flooring.
Chevron parquet, whilst more difficult to fit, perhaps offers the most interesting finish of all flooring types. To create a Chevron pattern, the planks must be laid at a 45-degree angle. This will form a V-shaped pattern and result in a visually striking and timeless look.
If you have opted for an engineered wood floor, you may want to consider choosing thicker boards. Thicker boards usually have a thicker veneer, which is important if you plan on refinishing your flooring in the future. This is important with engineered wood flooring as only the veneer (aka the wear layer) can be sanded down. Although there is no wear layer for solid wood flooring, the same rule applies. The more thickness you have, the more times you can refinish your flooring. You can see more information on this on our wear tab.
Regardless of which floor type you choose, thicker boards will be more hard-wearing and provide slightly improved sound reduction performance. Therefore, you may want to consider thicker boards in upstairs apartments or bedrooms, for example. As well as this, thicker boards are usually more suited to higher traffic areas, where they can withstand greater use. However, they are often more expensive to show for this, so ultimately it comes down to budget and personal preference.
If you're using a water-based underfloor heating system, it's important that your flooring isn't too thick to prevent the transfer of heat into the room. We recommend using flooring with a maximum board thickness of 15MM with 4/4.5MM Underfloor Heating Suitable Underlay.
If you're choosing engineered parquet flooring, you'll hear the term 'wear layer' (also known as the veneer). This layer refers to the top, aesthetic surface layer of real wood, which gives the engineered flooring its look.
In most cases, sanding the top layer of engineered parquet flooring will remove up to 1MM of surface, with a minimum of 1MM leftover for protection. As a rough guide, here’s the number of times a floor can be sanded, based on the initial wear layer thickness:
(Please note: Sanding times is a guide only, the number of times a floor can be sanded will vary on an individual basis.)
