The Caledonian Engineered Iona Oak Brushed and Oiled Click Lok is designed for homes that want a traditional oak floor with a more natural, tactile finish. The combination of brushing and oiling gives the boards a softer, more authentic feel underfoot, while the narrower plank width creates a classic wood floor appearance that works particularly well in cosy living spaces and period-style homes.
Each board measures 125mm wide, giving the floor a more detailed layout compared to wider contemporary planks. This narrower format helps create a timeless look that suits both older properties and more traditional interiors. The boards are supplied in mixed lengths, which helps avoid repetitive patterns and gives the finished floor a more natural flow once installed.
The surface is brushed and oiled. Brushing removes some of the softer grain from the oak, leaving behind a lightly textured surface that helps the natural detail stand out more clearly. The oiled finish enhances the warmth and variation within the oak without covering the wood beneath a heavy coating, helping the floor retain a more natural appearance overall.
This is mixed grade oak, so visible knots, grain patterns, and tonal variation are all part of the finished look. These natural features give the floor more depth and character and help it feel more like traditional solid timber flooring once laid.
The floor is built using an engineered multi-layer construction, which improves stability compared to solid wood. This helps minimise movement caused by changes in humidity and temperature, making the floor suitable for conservatories and water-based underfloor heating systems. Bathrooms and areas with standing moisture should still be avoided.
The 3mm solid oak wear layer allows the floor to be sanded and refinished up to two times during its lifespan. While refinishing is unlikely to be necessary for many years in most homes, it gives the floor added longevity over thinner engineered products.
Installation uses a Click Lok system, allowing the boards to click together for a quicker and more straightforward fit. For the best finish, the boards should still be tapped into place using a tapping block and rubber mallet to ensure all joins are fitted securely together. The floor is usually installed as a floating floor over a 3mm underlay, helping improve insulation, reduce sound transfer, and protect against small amounts of subfloor moisture. When fitting over water-based underfloor heating, a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended, with floor surface temperatures kept below 27°C.
Because this is an oiled floor, the surface is not completely sealed. Spills should be wiped up reasonably quickly to avoid marking, especially in busy household areas. The advantage of oil, however, is that smaller worn or scratched areas can often be repaired locally without refinishing the entire room.
When ordering, allow approximately 10% extra for cuts and wastage, plus an additional 5% for natural grading variation.
The Caledonian Iona Oak Brushed and Oiled feels much closer to traditional solid wood flooring thanks to its textured surface and natural finish. The narrower boards also give it a more timeless look that suits both cottage-style and classic interiors beautifully.
Charlotte, our Product Expert, recommends the Caledonian because:
Authentic Texture: Brushed finish gives the floor a more natural timber feel
Traditional Appearance: Narrower planks create a classic wood floor layout
Easy Spot Repairs: Oiled finish allows smaller damaged areas to be treated locally
Natural Character: Mixed grade oak adds warmth and variation throughout the floor
