Description
The Caledonian Engineered Ness Smoked Oak Brushed and Oiled is a premium engineered wood floor designed to bring deeper smoked oak tones and natural texture into the home. The darker colouring gives the boards a richer and more characterful appearance, while the brushed and oiled surface helps preserve the authentic feel of real wood rather than creating a heavily coated finish.
Each board measures 190mm wide, making this a wide plank flooring option that helps rooms feel more spacious and open. The wider boards reduce the number of visible joins across the floor, creating a cleaner and more seamless layout that works particularly well in larger spaces and open-plan interiors. The boards are supplied in mixed lengths, helping the finished floor look more natural and less repetitive once installed.
The surface is finished with a combination of brushing and oiling. Brushing lightly textures the oak by removing some of the softer grain, helping the natural grain patterns and markings become more visible and tactile underfoot. The oil then enhances the smoked colouring within the wood while maintaining a softer and more natural appearance than lacquered alternatives.
This is mixed grade oak, meaning knots, tonal variation, and grain movement are all part of the finished appearance. These natural features work especially well with the smoked finish, giving the floor additional warmth and depth while helping it feel more authentic and less uniform.
The flooring uses an engineered multi-layer construction, designed to provide greater stability than solid wood flooring. This helps minimise movement caused by seasonal temperature and humidity changes, making the floor suitable for conservatories and water-based underfloor heating systems. Bathrooms and areas exposed to standing moisture should still be avoided.
With a substantial 20mm overall thickness and an impressive 6mm solid oak wear layer, the floor is designed for excellent long-term durability. The thick wear layer allows the surface to be sanded and refinished up to five times during its lifespan, making it a particularly durable option for busy homes and high-use living spaces.
Installation uses a tongue and groove fitting system, with boards designed to be glued together and typically installed as a floating floor. An underlay is generally fitted beneath the flooring to help improve sound insulation, heat retention, and offer protection against minor subfloor moisture. For water-based underfloor heating, a 4mm compressed rubber underlay is recommended, with floor surface temperatures kept below 27°C.
As this is an oiled floor, the surface is not fully sealed, so spillages should be cleaned promptly to help prevent moisture marking. One advantage of an oiled finish is that smaller scratched or worn areas can often be repaired locally without refinishing the entire floor.
When ordering, allow approximately 10% extra for cuts and wastage, plus an additional 5% for natural grading variation.
