What is Click Flooring?

Click flooring is an installation method. It can be found in other varieties of floor such as bamboo solid wood and vinyl, but is particularly common in engineered wood flooring due to this material’s stability and strength. It looks similar to tongue and groove flooring but has an interlocking profile around its edges. This means the boards click together and are less likely to shift apart. It creates a close fit without gaps.

Click engineered wood flooring doesn’t require any glue or specialist equipment to fit. This means that it’s easy to install at home and is particularly popular for DIY floors. If you prefer to hire a professional floor fitter, it also usually costs less with click flooring.

Click flooring has a lot of different names according to the manufacturer that creates the floor. We use the term ‘Click Lok’ in our product descriptions, but you might also see ‘click lock’, ‘click system’ or sometimes ‘interlocking flooring’. These all refer to the same installation method that makes installing a new wood floor simple and easy.

Will it Make my Floor Look Different?

Some people worry that using click flooring rather than tongue and groove will alter the final look of the floor, but using click engineered wood flooring has no visual impact upon your floor at all.

If anything, it can make the floor fit together more closely, reducing gaps between the boards. This not only makes keeping your floor clean easier, but it also makes your floor look better, smoother and more complete. Click engineered wood flooring is also less prone to shifting as people walk on it, meaning it’s less likely to move and create gaps in time.

How Long Does Click Engineered Wood Flooring Last?

Engineered wood flooring is a long-lasting flooring material. It’s highly durable and lasts for decades without any special or unusual care.

Eventually, you may notice that your floor becomes worn or discoloured - after a minimum of a decade, but usually longer. Like with solid wood flooring, once this happens, you can resand and resurface it. This brings back the colour and finish that your floor had when it was new! Depending on the thickness of your engineered wood floor, this can be done many times and therefore means that click engineered wood flooring lasts for decades.

If you do ever decide to change the look of your room, click flooring is just as easy to take out as it is to install.

How to Lay Click Flooring

You can lay click flooring in several different ways, but the most common is to loose lay (also known as ‘float’) over an underlay. Underlays provide additional insulation, sound protection and help to level the floor ready for your new engineered wood flooring. Simply click the boards together to create a stable and close-fitting floor.

It does require a solid base so can’t be installed over joists.

Click Flooring for Bathrooms

Engineered wood flooring is suitable for moisture-prone areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. Due to the way it’s created, it’s an extremely durable and rigid board. Unlike real wood floors, it doesn’t warp, shrink or expand to the same extent. This makes it resilient against moisture. Click flooring works with this perfectly.

Because the engineered wood flooring boards click together in the click lok system, they also move together. All material shrinks and expands in response to heat and moisture - engineered wood flooring less than solid wood. The click system means that as the floor responds to moisture, all the boards can move together, minimising the risk of boards moving apart.

Engineered wood click flooring is the perfect click flooring for bathrooms. It creates a stunning real wood look with the resilience you need.
