Lacquer

A lacquer is one of the many finish options we have available at Flooring 365, both on our engineered wood flooring and solid wood flooring ranges.

It’s essential that every floor is finished in some way, usually with either an oil or lacquer, in order to protect the wood from foot traffic and daily use.

We do have a range of unfinished engineered wood floors, which you can install and then finish yourself. This can be a great option if you have extremely specific finishes or effects in mind. However, the majority of people choose to get a prefinished floor. This is much less labour intensive and means you can enjoy your floor immediately after installation.

What is a Lacquer Finish?

A lacquer finish is a highly popular way to complete the look of your floor and to provide protection. It describes a very hard, clear and shiny finish that gives significant protection to your engineered wood floor.

A lacquer is applied to the wooden floorboard before being sold. It’s applied to the real wood surface and, through solvent evaporation or a curing process, dries into an extremely hard finish.

A lacquer is one of the most durable finishes available and can come in a range from glossy to matt. Unlike oiled finishes, a lacquer doesn’t soak into the wood material, but sits on top.

Why Choose Lacquer?

A lacquer finish is a popular choice, partly due to how easy a lacquer floor is to care for. While an oiled floor need be retouched and finished relatively frequently to keep it looking its best, a lacquer floor can go for years without needing any work.

A lacquer is also very easy to clean. As the finish sits on top of the material, rather than soaking into the wood, any spills sit on top of the lacquer which minimises damage to the wood.

They do, of course, need to be wiped up straight away! As the flooring is pre-finished, there are gaps between the boards into which liquids could seep and damage even engineered wood flooring.

Down the line, if damage does eventually occur, the lacquer finish can easily be sanded and re-applied so the floor looks as good as new.

Engineered Wood Flooring

Engineered wood flooring is a fantastic way to get a real wood floor with more durability and stability than with solid wood.

While solid wood flooring is created from a single piece of oak, walnut or bamboo, engineered wood flooring consists of a top layer of high quality real wood on top of several timber layers made from solid and long-lasting plywood. These layers are compressed under high intensity conditions to create the floorboard.

The engineered structure creates an extremely stable and reliable floorboard that is more durable than solid wood flooring. When this is combined with the durability of a lacquer finish, you get a floor that’s set to last for years.

All materials, from wood to metal, minutely shrink and expand under different heat and moisture conditions. With solid wood flooring, this can cause permanent damage and warping to the wood. On the other hand, the layers in engineered wood flooring allow the floor to adapt to different heat and moisture conditions. As they minutely shrink and expand, they can move separately from each other, which means the floorboard stays stable and doesn’t permanently warp.

This ability means that engineered wood flooring can be used in kitchens and in rooms with underfloor heating.

Lacquered Engineered Wood Flooring

Lacquered engineered wood flooring combines a highly popular finish with one of the most stable and durable varieties of real wood flooring.
