18mm

Flooring 365 are not only experts in real wood floors, but are specialists in engineered wood flooring. We have a massive collection of different flooring options for your home or commercial space, including 18mm engineered wood flooring. 18mm isn’t our thickest option (we have flooring up to 22mm thickness and as thin as 10mm), but it’s one of the most popular. Find out more information about what engineered wood flooring is in our specialist guide.

Thicker flooring thicknesses tend to offer a greater amount of insulation than the thinner options and increased sound proofing, among other things.

Does Thickness Indicate Quality?

With engineered wood flooring, thickness is not the same as quality. A thicker floor is not equal to a higher quality floor as engineered wood floors are all created in the same way. A thicker floor made from the same material and from the same manufacturer is unlikely to have any benefits regarding quality.

There are instances where thicker floors do bring benefits. This isn’t a question of quality, however, but rather picking the right thickness for your needs. For example, if the top layer of the flooring is thicker, it allows it to be sanded and refinished in the future, increasing the floor’s lifespan.

How to Choose the Right Thickness

Things to consider when choosing the thickness of your engineered flooring includes:

Evenness of subfloor

If your subfloor is uneven, it’s often a good idea to choose a thicker floor, such as our 18mm engineered wood flooring to minimise the impact of an uneven base.

Previous Floor Thickness

If you’re choosing an engineered wood floor to replace a previous floor, it’s often a good idea to choose the same floor thickness. This reduces the need to change door heights or replace skirting boards.

Noise Reduction

If you live in an apartment, it’s worthwhile to consider the thickness of your floor, as thinner floors will increase the noise transfer between your apartment and below (and vice versa).

Future Floor Sanding

A thicker floor usually allows increased wear and durability as the floor can be sanded in the future. The number of times it can be sanded and refinished varies according not just to the overall thickness, but the thickness of the top layer - the veneer.

18mm engineered wood flooring often has veneer around 4 or 5mm thicknesses. A 4mm veneer can be resanded approximately four times, greatly increasing the lifespan of the floor.

Underfloor Heating

If you have underfloor heating, it’s important not to choose an engineered wood floor that’s too thick. An 18mm or 20mm engineered wood floor would insulate your room too effectively, preventing the heat from getting in. We usually recommend no thicker than 15mm for homes with underfloor heating.

18mm engineered oak flooring

With Flooring 365, you can find a range of 18mm floors in both oak and walnut options. Oak flooring tends to be the most popular flooring option for this thickness. It comes in a range of different colours from very light oak through to coffee, and for a range of different budgets.

Our 18mm engineered walnut flooring is also a fantastic choice. It offers a very rich and deep range of colours, perfect for any room or space.

Click Wood Flooring

Our 18mm engineered wood flooring has different fitting options, both of which provide an easy installation method. It makes getting a new engineered floor into your home simple and quick. You can enjoy your new floor in no time.

Click System

Click system 18mm engineered wood flooring is perfect for DIY fittings as it’s the most simple installation method. It doesn’t require glue, nails or screws. Instead, the floorboards simply slot together. The perfectly matching sides create a close fit, eliminating the risk of gaps that can trap dirt and reduce the quality of the final finish.

Click system flooring can’t be installed over joists, but needs a solid base. Be aware of the installation variety of your 18mm wood flooring if you’re looking to fit your new floor over joists.

Tongue and Groove

Tongue and groove is the more traditional option for floor installation varieties. It features one side of the board with a small indent (the groove) while the other side presents a protruding edge (the tongue) that slots into the groove. It can be slightly harder to install than click wood flooring, but creates a smooth look without gaps between the boards.
