Engineered wood flooring is a man-made product. It has been manufactured using multiple layers of plywood and then topped with a layer of solid wood. The top layer (also known as the wear layer) includes 1.2mm to 6mm of solid Oak or Walnut veneer. The different layers of plywood are what gives engineered wood flooring the added advantages of increased durability and resistance against temperature and humidity changes. Whereas the top layer of solid wood is what gives engineered wood flooring its beautiful appearance and makes it hard to differentiate solid wood from engineered wood. Once installed, it really is impossible to tell the difference between the two.
Our click lok engineered wood flooring features our most simple installation method, making it the ideal way to install floors, even for beginners.
Any wood flooring can be susceptible to scratches but will withstand daily use, even in busy households. Thankfully, our engineered wood floors can be sanded and refinished should the worst happen. For more information on how to refinish your flooring visit our maintenance guides.
No wood floors are waterproof, not even engineered wood floors. However, they are much more durable against moisture and humidity than standard solid wood floors. We still wouldn’t advise letting puddles sit around for too long if you want to keep your flooring in top condition.
Like any product made from solid wood, there is a chance of it warping, expanding, and retracting under different temperature and humidity conditions. To avoid this from happening, you must ensure that you leave your engineered wood flooring to acclimatise before installing.
To acclimatise your flooring, you must leave it laid down on the floor of the room where it will be installed. We recommend doing this at least 48 hours before proceeding to install your new floor. This will allow enough time for your flooring to adjust to its new home.
Unfinished floors come completely untouched and have not had any stains, oils, or lacquers applied to them. This allows you to finish your flooring however you see fit. There are numerous different finishes out on the market and each one has its pros and cons. Visit our finish guide to get a better idea of the benefits before deciding. You can then choose from a range of different colours and styles such as invisible, matt, or gloss. We advise that you always apply your finish before installing your new floor.
Brushed finishes have a much more enhanced grain and texture to them. To achieve this look, we brush the floor using steel wire wool to remove the thin upper layers during the manufacturing process. The level of depth and texture varies, depending on the flooring type and level of brushing.
Handscraped finishes give each board its own individual character to create a worn and rustic look. The wavy surface of handscraped floors is extremely unique and looks especially good on glossy, lacquered boards. It’s also a great option for anyone with pets as it can hide and conceal any slight damage much easier.
Aged flooring is created by adding light wear to the surface of engineered wood planks, such as bumps and scrapes, to create the illusion of flooring that has been laid for years. Varying levels of aged finishes are available, giving an impression of short and long-term wear.
Our distressed floors feature a range of slight imperfections to create a floor that looks worn and antique. This is a brilliant budget-friendly alternative to weathered reclaimed floors.
Lacquered finishes create a protective layer to help reduce damage from spillages, liquids, and light scuffs. This makes them ideal for high-traffic areas. However, we still recommend cleaning any spillages as soon as possible to keep your flooring looking its best.
Oiled finishes flow deep into the wood grain to enhance the floor’s appearance and offer deep protection. However, unlike Lacquered finishes, oiled flooring does not create a surface layer and therefore requires a higher level of maintenance. We find that most customers choose an oiled finish due to its striking colours and wood grain textures, rather than purely for protection.
Generally speaking, board thickness is a case of personal preference, however, thicker boards, whilst usually more expensive do tend to be more hard wearing and provide a slightly improved sound reduction performance, which should be considered in upstairs apartments or bedrooms, for example. As well as this, thicker boards are usually more suited to higher traffic areas, where they can withstand greater use.
